Athlete of the Week Nominees: March 11-17

Kon Knueppel, Wisconsin Lutheran

Knueppel capped off his senior campaign in style over the weekend, playing at the state tournament for the first time, capturing gold, and being named Mr. Basketball in the state of Wisconsin. The Duke commit and top-ranked player in the state showed out in the 56-54 state semifinal win over Nicolet. Knueppel finished with 26 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and a block on 11 of 18 shooting. Wisco then squared off with conference foe Pewaukee looking to avenge three straight season ending losses to Nick Janowski and company. It never seemed close as Wisconsin Lutheran walked away with an 83-62 win. Knueppel finished with just 11 points, but added 11 assists, five rebounds, and two steals. What's more impressive is Knueppel was tasked with guarding Nebraska commit Nick Janowski most of the game and slowed the lead guard down. Knueppel's ability to effect the game in a multitude of ways is a big reason why Wisconsin Lutheran finished a perfect 30-0 and had one of the best seasons in state history.

Emmitt Konieczny, Columbus Catholic

Konieczny was extremely efficient as he led the Columbus Catholic boys basketball team to its first ever state championship this past weekend. The Lakeland commit began his tournament with 14 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in the 78-65 win over Solon Springs in the Division 5 state semifinal matchup. He went four of nine from behind the arc and two of two from the free throw line. Konieczny saved his best performance for his final however. He went for 31 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the 81-75 championship win over Abundant Life Christian. The senior wing made five of ten three point shots and was a perfect ten of ten from the charity stripe. His five made three point shots in a game tied a state record for Division 5, while his nine made set a tournament record. Konieczny also set the record for free-throw percentage in the tournament by not missing any of his twelve attempts.

Sekou Konneh, Saint Thomas More

Konneh was one of the best players at the state tournament this weekend, and it showed on the court. One of the top uncommitted players of the class of 2024, Konneh was a force for the Division 3 champion Cavaliers. First in a 68-45 win over Prescott in the semifinals, Konneh finished with 22 points, twelve rebounds, four steals and three assists. Konneh followed that up with 22 points, fourteen rebounds, three blocks and an assist in the 65-54 win over Lakeside Lutheran in the Division 3 championship game. For the weekend, Konneh recorded two double-doubles, shot 63% from the field, and was a deterrent around the rim defensively.

Nolan Minessale, Marquette University

Minessale should be on everyone's all-tournament team as he was extremely impressive in the two Division 1 state tournament games this past weekend. The St. Thomas (MN) commit shot 10 of 12 and finished with 24 points in the 67-60 semifinal win over Kettle Moraine. He added eight rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks in the victory. Minessale then went for 29 points on 11 of 16 shooting in the 84-62 Division 1 state championship win over Arrowhead. He added six rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and a steal. Minessale shot 75% from the field over the two games, proving he's not just a volume scorer, but an efficient one. It was the third time the Hilltoppers had made the WIAA State Tournament and the first gold ball they've taken home.

Landon Thousand, Mineral Point

Thousand was incredible as he led the storied Pointers program to its first ever state championship game; providing one of the best moments of the weekend along the way. The senior wing filled the stat sheet in the first game, going for 24 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a steal and a block. No shot was as important as the final one. The Pointers made an improbable comeback, down seven points with 22 seconds left to Aquinas in the Division 4 state semifinal. Down three with six seconds left, Thousand caught an inbound pass on the deep right wing and nailed the game-winning shot to give the Pointers a 62-61 win. Following that heart pounding victory, Mineral Point did it again in the state finals, winning on a last second put back 65-64 over Kenosha St. Joseph. Thousand finished the game with 15 points, eight assists, and six rebounds as head coach Dan Burreson and the Pointers claimed gold for the first time.
