Brookfield East's Shae Kelley picked as the state's top senior defender

Brookfield East's Shae Kelley has been picked as the state's top senior defender as part of the WSN Senior Basketball Awards.  

Kelley is a quick guard who defends at a high level, while also handling the point guard duties for her squad. She has a high basketball IQ and uses her quick hands and feet to get steals and deflections. 

The 5-10 point guard tallied 18.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 5.9 steals per game with 49 three-pointers made for coach Tyler Saxton and the Spartans. 

She finished third in the state with 158 steals (most in Division 1). 

Kelley, who holds Division I offers, finished her career with 1,457 points, 628 rebounds, 457 assists, and 567 steals.

She was named first-team Division 1 WBCA all-state as a junior and senior, and honorable mention all-state as a sophomore. Shae was a three-time first-team all-Greater Metro selection and was voted as the league's player of the year as a senior. 

Kelley helped lead Brookfield East to a 90-21 record with two state tournament appearances, finishing as the Division 1 state runner-up in 2023. 

The finalists for the award were Kelley, Lucy Leininger of Germantown, Kallie Peppler of Hortonville, Paige Seckar of Oshkosh West, and Sydney Whitehouse of Notre Dame. 

Past winners of the award include Braelyn Torres of Kettle Moraine (2023), Lyric Johnson of Hortonville (2022), Sammy Opichka of Notre Dame (2021), Maddison Baker of West Bend West (2020), Kiarra Otto of Laconia, Emma Wittmershaus of Bangor (2018), Myriama Smith-Traore of Whitewater (2017), Morgan Glatczak of Mukwonago (2016), Taylor Higginbotham of Germantown (2015), Jen Wellnitz of Black Hawk (2014), Emily Gustafson of South Shore (2013), and Alexis Lindstrom of Howards Grove (2012).
