Below are the rSchoolToday Athlete of the Week Nominees for this week. Voting is open until Thursday at 2:00 pm, so be sure to vote for who you feel is most deserving and spread the word. Users may vote once per day.

Athlete of the Week Nominees: March 18-24

Mitch Coburn, Homestead

Lacrosse is in its first season being a WIAA sanctioned high school sport in the state of Wisconsin. Through week one, Coburn is the top scorer in the state on the boys side. Homestead won its first two contests of the season and Coburn was a big reason why. The sophomore attackman begin his year with two goals and two assists in the Highlanders 11-10 win over Mukwonago. He followed that up with four goals and two assists in a 13-4 win over Marquette on Thursday. Coburn recorded six goals and four assists, accounting for a state-leading ten points through the first week.

Aloysius Franzen, Stevens Point

Franzen took home a pair of first place finishes in the large school division at the Ripon College Showcase Meet this past week. The senior distance runner won the 800-meter run in a time of 1:59.56. The 2023 WIAA Division 1 boys cross country state runner-up also took home a first place finish in the 1,600 meter run. Franzen won the race in a time of 4:19.37, which was nearly eleven seconds better than the second place finisher.

Lydia Merrick, Freedom

Merrick was on her game this past weekend competing in the small school division at the Ripon College Showcase Meet, winning a trio of events for the Freedom girls track and field team. The junior took home a first place finish in the 400-meter race, finishing in a time of 1:00.45. Merrick also won the 60-meter hurdles by almost a full second, finishing in 9.71 seconds. She finished the event off with another top finish in the high jump competition, winning with a mark of 5-7. Merrick competed earlier in the week at the Oshkosh girls Small School Meet and won the high jump competition and finished fourth in the 200-meter dash.

Josie Scheithauer, Rib Lake

Scheithauer had a great opening week to her senior softball season, leading Rib Lake to a 3-0 record over the weekend at Rhinelander. First in a 16-0 win over Spencer, the senior pitcther/infielder went four of four at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored on two singles, adding a stolen base. She also started the game on the mound and pitched a four-inning complete game shutout, giving up two hits and striking out five. In the following 15-5 win over Pembine/Goodman on Saturday, Scheithauer went one of three from the plate with a walk, RBI and two runs scored. She finished her weekend off going four of five from the plate with two doubles and five RBIs in a 10-9 victory over Shiocton.

Inez Schmidt, Cameron

Inez stood out in her first high school track and field competition, competing at the Northern Badger Class Small Schools Meet at UW-Stout this past weekend. The freshman runner took home two individual crowns and was a part of a relay winning team as well. Inez won the 800-meter run by .08 seconds, winning with a time of 2:29.24. She then won the 1600-meter run in a time of 5:38.79, over four seconds behind the second place finisher. Finally, Inez was the second leg of the 4x400 meter relay team that won the event and set a meet record with a time of 4:19.97.
