Athlete of the Week Nominees: April 1-7

Sophia Bablitch, Rosholt

Bablitch took home a first and second place finish at the Wisconsin State Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend at UW-Whitewater. Rosholt as a team finished fifth with 19 points, all scored by Bablitch. The senior runner won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:16.18, finishing one second ahead of Chequamegon's Autumn Michalski. Bablitch finished second in the 1600-meter run, losing to Michalski by two seconds. Bablitch is committed to run at the University of Minnesota next season.

Brodie Hartmann, Bonduel

In a week full of snow, slush, and sunshine, not many baseball games that were scheduled were played in many parts of the state. Bonduel got one game in on Monday, and Hartmann shined. Taking the mound, the senior hurler began the year off on the right track for the Bears in a 10-0 win over Menominee Indian. Hartmann struck out 12 batters and allowed just two base runners, a walk and a hit, in the five-inning shutout victory. He was also effective at the plate. Hartmann went one of two with two RBIS, two walks, and a run scored.

Aubrey Malean, Boyceville

Malean was lights out in her first four career varsity games for the Boyceville softball team last week. The freshman hurler began her high school career by pitching a three-hit, six-inning shutout in a 10-0 win over Spring Valley. She struck out ten batters and also went three for three from the plate with an RBI and three runs scored, including two stolen bases. Malean then pitched a complete game in a 3-1 win over Elk Mound, striking out eight and allowing two hits, six walks, and one run (unearned). In her third game, she pitched a six-inning complete game, striking out ten and allowing one earned run in a 12-2 win over Gibraltar. She added three walks, two runs scored, and a stolen base from the plate. Malean finished her first week striking out five through three innings in a 20-0 win over Chetek-Weyerhaueser. She went one of three from the plate with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. For the week, Malean went 4-0 on the mound allowing just three runs (one earned). She struck out 33 batters in 22 innings.

Austin Weber, Sun Prairie East

Weber has had a hot start to his senior year for the Sun Prairie co-op boys lacrosse squad. Last week the Cardinals won a pair of games, beginning with a 9-8 thriller over Verona. Weber scored a goal and assisted on two in the victory. He then took complete control in a 14-9 win over Elkhorn on Saturday. Weber scored an incredible nine goals on his own in the win and assisted on three more. On the season, Weber has a state-leading 16 goals and also leads the state with 24 points scored.

Laney Wiebel, Oshkosh West

The Oshkosh West girls soccer team is 4-0 early on this season after winning three games last week. Wiebel was the catalyst the Wildcats. In a 5-0 win over Stevens Point on Monday, the senior forward netted a goal and assisted on another. She followed that up by setting her teammates up for success in a 2-1 win over Sheboygan North, assisting on both goals scored. Wiebel finished her week by scoring a hat trick and assisting on one more in a 5-0 win over Hartford. For the week, Wiebel scored four goals and assisted on four goals, scoring 12 points herself.
