How the Top 50 boys' basketball players from 2023 class fared in first year of college

Here's an interesting stat that shows the times we are in as it relates to college basketball.

Of the Top 30 players in the final WSN Player Rankings for the 2022 class, 18 already have entered the transfer portal at least once.

That includes nine of the top 10, although top-ranked Seth Trimble of Menomonee Falls recently withdrew from the portal and opted to return to North Carolina for his junior season. 

Three players have transferred twice and will be at their third school in three seasons in the fall. 

Meanwhile, here's a quick look at how the Top 50 in WSN's final class of 2023 Player Rankings fared during their first year of college basketball.

1. Milan Momcilovic, 6-8, F, Pewaukee (Iowa State, DI)
Momcilovic turned in an outstanding season for an Iowa State program that went 29-8 under Wisconsin native TJ Otzelberger. Momcilovic averaged 10.9 points and 3.1 rebounds while making 61 three-point baskets and shooting 36 percent from outside the arc.  

2. John Kinziger, 5-11, G, De Pere (Illinois State, DI)
Kinziger averaged 25.2 minutes per game for the Redbirds and helped the team to a 15-17 record by averaging 8.7 points and 2.4 rebounds. Kinziger shot 39 percent from three-point range and made 40 triples. 

3. Jeremy Lorenz, 6-8, F, Brillion (Wofford, DI)
Lorenz had a strong rookie campaign for Wofford. He averaged 20.3 minutes per game along with 6.8 ppg and 4.3 rpg as the Terriers went 17-15.

4. Demarion Burch, 6-4, G, Milwaukee Hamilton (Bradley, DI)
Like Momcilovic, Kinziger and Lorenz, Burch had a strong initial season. The athletic wing played in 34 games and averaged 14.2 minutes as Bradley went 23-12 under former Marquette star Brian Wardle. Burch averaged 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds.

5. Marcus Hall, 6-6, G/F, D.C. Everest (Green Bay, DI)
Hall was instrumental in helping the Phoenix turn things around in a big-time way in 2023-24. After winning just three games two years ago, Green Bay finished 18-14 last winter as Hall averaged 22.2 minutes, 6.4 points and 3.3 rebounds for coach Sundance Wicks. 

6. Mac Wrecke, 6-5, G, Arrowhead (Green Bay, DI)
Wrekce sat out the 2023-24 season at Green Bay as a redshirt.

7. William Whorton, 6-8, F, Milwaukee Rufus King (South Dakota State, DI)
Whorton sat out the 2023-24 season at South Dakota State as a redshirt. 

8. Cal Klesmit, 6-2, G, Neenah (Northern Michigan, DII)
Klesmit sat out the 2023-24 season at Northern Michigan as a redshirt.

9. Simeon Murchison, 6-8, F, Milwaukee Hamilton (Milwaukee, DI)
Murchison saw limited action for the Panthers, averaging 0.7 points and 0.8 rebounds for a team that went 20-15.

10. Gavyn Hurley, 6-5, G, Middleton (Winona State, DII)
Hurley battled injuries as a freshman, but was still able to make contributions for a very good Winona State program. Hurley played in 13 games, averaging 13.2 minutes, 2.6 points and 2.5 rebounds for a team that went 21-10 under Wisconsin native Todd Eisner. 

11. Levi Birkholz, 6-3, G, Lakeside Lutheran (The Citadel, DI)
Birkholz appeared in 17 games at The Citadel, averaging 6.0 minutes, 0.7 points and 0.6 rebounds. He entered the transfer portal following the season and recently committed to NCAA Division II Minnesota State Moorhead.

12. Luther Smith Jr., 6-1, G, Sussex Hamilton (Southern Indiana, DI)
Smith played in eight games for Southern Indiana, scoring seven points and grabbing five rebounds. 

13. Robert Peters, 6-8, F, West Allis Hale (VMI, DI)
Peters appeared in 18 games and averaged 9.1 minutes, 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds as VMI went 4-28.

14. Tyran Cook, 6-2, G, Waukesha South (VMI, DI)
Cook turned in a very strong freshman campaign for VMI. He averaged 12.6 points and 2.8 rebounds while playing 28.5 minutes per outing. Following the season, Cook entered the transfer portal. 

15. Alex Sherwood, 6-7, F, Appleton Xavier (St. Leo, DII)
Sherwood started seven games and averaged 12.6 minutes for St. Leo, which went 11-17 under Wisconsin native Lance Randall. Sherwood averaged 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds for the Lions. 

16. Riley Brooks, 6-6, G, Ripon (Northern Michigan, DII)
Brooks had a solid rookie year at NCAA Division II power Northern Michigan. He started 10 games and averaged 7.5 points and 1.8 assists for Wisconsin native Matt Majkrzak.

17. Arhman Lewis, 6-0, G, Madison La Follette (Augustana, DII)
Lewis had a big year for Division II Augustana, averaging 8.8 points and 3.6 assists while playing 23.3 minutes per outing. He entered the transfer portal following the season and recently committed to Division II Emporia State.

18. Jake Dunham, 6-5, G, South Milwaukee (Parkside, DII)
Dunham averaged 12.5 minutes for the Rangers and averaged 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds for coach Luke Reigel's squad, which went 13-16.

19. Emmett Lawton, 6-2, G, Notre Dame Academy (Washington University, DIII)
Lawton averaged 13.3 minutes, 3.3 points and 1.9 rebounds for Washington University, a NCAA Division III school in St. Louis with Wisconsin native Pat Juckem as head coach.

20. Jamariea Dalton, 6-2, G, Fond du Lac (Oshkosh, DIII)
Dalton played in 20 games and averaged 18.2 minutes, 4.5 points and 2.5 rebounds for the Titans, who finished 10-15.

21. Braden McGlothlin, 6-3, G, Catholic Memorial (Indianapolis, DII)
McGlothlin spent his first year in college as a redshirt and then entered the transfer portal when his coach at Indianapolis, Paul Corsaro, took the job at Division I IUPUI. McGlothlin then committed to Division II University of Illinois-Springfield. 

22. Nic Williams, 6-1, G, La Crosse Central (Bay College, NJCAA DII)
Williams helped Bay College to a 27-5 record. He averaged 13.4 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 55 percent from the field. 

23. Caleb Glaser, 6-8, F, Appleton East (Hillsdale, DII)
Hillsdale went 18-10 under state native Keven Bradley, and Glaser had a big role for the Chargers. He played in all 28 games and averaged 12.4 minutes, 3.5 points and 2.8 rebounds.

24. Bennett Fried, 6-7, F, La Crosse Central (Drake, DI)
Fried sat out the season as a redshirt at Drake.

25. Matt Schmainda, 6-1, G, Brookfield East (Michigan Tech, DII)
Michigan Tech went 11-17 under Wisconsin native Josh Buettner and Schmainda saw action in 20 outings. He averaged 9.1 minutes and 1.5 points.

26. JR Lukenbill, 6-5, G/F, Burlington (Northern Michigan, DII)
Lukenbill opted to leave Northern Michigan last fall and instead enroll at Division III Whitewater. He appeared in 12 games and averaged 1.1 points and 1.5 rebounds as the Warhawks went 17-9.

27. Mason Prey, 6-4, G, Newman Catholic (Stevens Point, DIII)
Prey decided to leave school last fall and did not play college basketball during the 2023-24 season. 

28. Demerius Shakur, 6-4, G, Martin Luther (Des Moines Area Community College, NJCAA DII)
Shakur helped Des Moines Area Community College to a 31-5 record. He averaged 17.4 minutes per game while also contributing 4.1 ppg and 2.0 rpg.

29. Jordan Malmlov, 6-0, G, Prescott (Nevada, DI)
Malmlov served as a practice player at Nevada this past season and plans to do the same in 2024-25 with the hopes of earning a walkon spot on the roster.

30. Colin Madson, 6-3, G, Mukwonago (Whitewater, DIII)
Madson saw action off the bench for a very good and experienced Whitewater squad. He averaged 1.9 points and 0.9 rebounds. 

31. Peter Lattos, 6-8, F, West Salem (Northern Michigan, DII)
Lattos sat out the season as a redshirt at Northern Michigan.

32. Seth Miron, 6-5, G/F, Kimberly (Stevens Point, DIII)
Miron was one of the better first-year players in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He started 26 of 27 games for the Pointers and averaged 8.5 points and 3.1 rebounds for a team that went 14-13.

33. Max Lucey, 6-4, G, Cuba City (Platteville, DIII)
Lucey appeared in 11 games and scored five points on the season for Platteville, which went 26-5 and won the WIAC championship.

34. Jamiir Allen, 6-1, G, Wisconsin Lutheran (St. Cloud State, DII)
Allen led St. Cloud State in scoring at 10.2 ppg while also contibuting 2.4 rpg. He started seven of 28 games and helped St. Cloud State to a 12-17 record under Wisconsin native Quincy Henderson. 

35. Solomon Garrison, 5-10, PG, Homestead (St. Ambrose, NAIA)
Garrison was on the men's basketball roster at St. Ambrose as a freshman, but did not see action in varsity contests.

36. Bennett McCormick, 6-3, G/F, Catholic Memorial (Valparaiso, Football)
McCormick is listed as a 6-foot-3, 190-pound wide receiver in the Valparaiso Unversity football program. 

37. Devin Davenport, 6-2, G, Milwaukee Lutheran (Trinidad Junior College, NJCAA DII)
Davenport had a strong rookie year for a very good Trinidad Junior College squad. He played in 30 games, averaging 9.8 minutes, 8.1 points and 1.9 rebounds for the NJCAA Division II school located in Colorado.

38. Tyler Orr, 5-11, G, Rice Lake (Winona State, DII)
Orr sat out the 2023-24 season at Winona State as a redshirt.

39. Max Tutas, 6-3, G/F, Sheboygan North (Oshkosh, DIII)
Tutas appeared in just five games for the Titans.

40. A.J. Uttech, 6-1, G, Columbus (Stevens Point, DIII)
Uttech played in just four games for the Pointers in 2023-24.

41. Isaiah Dietz, 6-6, F, Chequamegon (Concordia-St. Paul, DII)
Dietz sat out the 2023-24 season as a redshirt at Concordia-St. Paul. 

42. AJ Lieuwen, 6-0, G, Bay Port (McHenry Community College, NJCAA DII)
Lieuwen earned second-team all-NJCAA Region 4 honors for McHenry Junior College in Illinois. He averaged 24.3 minutes, 13.5 points and 2.9 rebounds to help his team to a 23-9 record.

43. Logan Baumgartner, 6-4, G/F, Medford (Stevens Point, DIII)
Baumgartner played in 23 games and averaged 14..6 minutes for the Pointers. He averaged 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds.

44. Austin Herro, 6-1, G, Whitnall (South Carolina, DI)
Herro joined the South Carolina basketball program as a walkon, and redshirted during the 2023-24 campaign.

45. Dawson Schmidt, 6-4, G, Shiocton (Olivet Nazarene, NAIA)
Schmidt played in 10 games for Olivet Nazarene and scored 17 points on the season for a program that went 22-9.

46. Anthony Carter, 6-1, G, Greenfield (Beloit, DIII)
Carter played a big role in helping Beloit College to a 16-10 record as he played in all 26 games and averaged 16.5 minutes, 6.7 points and 1.4 rebounds for the Buccaneers.

47. Seth Bunders, 6-0, G, Wauzeka-Steuben (Platteville, DIII)
Bunders played in eight games for the Pioneers and scored 10 points on the season. He announced his intention to transfer following the season. 

48. Cole Uhlenbrauck, 6-5, G/F, Saint Mary Catholic (St. Norbert, DIII)
Uhlenbrauck played in 10 games and scored six points for St. Norbert, which went 22-6 under coach Gary Grzesk.

49. Jaden Guyton, 6-2, G, Whitefish Bay (Lakeland College, DIII)
Guyton played in six games for the Muskies and scored eight points on the season as Lakeland finished 6-19.

50. Carson Koepnick, 6-1, G, West Salem (Viterbo, NAIA)
Koepnick played in 16 games for the V-Hawks, averaged 5.4 minutes, 1.4 points and 0.6 rebounds for a team that finished 12-16.
