STEVENS POINT - The UW-Stevens Point men s basketball team hit seven out of their eight free throw attempts in the final 1:43 to hold off a charging University of Texas at Dallas team to secure their spot in the NCAA Tournament s Elite Eight with a 74-67 victory Friday evening. Matt Moses (Fond du Lac) scored the first eight points of the game and helped Pointers jump out to an 8-0 lead before the Comets could put any points on the board.

14 of the 15 players on the Pointers roster are from Wisconsin high schools, including all eight that scored in last night's win. Stevens Point is ranked #5 in the latest d3hoops.com poll.

The Comets multiple defensive looks were able to slow down the Pointers offense and Texas-Dallas used that momentum to put together a 14-6 run. Jared Fleming hit a three pointer with 7:48 remaining in the half beginning their run and a lay-up by Jordan Eppink cut Point s lead to 31-28 with 3:25 remaining.

The Pointers managed to put together a 7-3 run to end the half, pushing their lead back up to 38-31. Both teams shot the ball well in the first half with Texas-Dallas hitting 48.1 percent of their shots while Point was red hot in the first half hitting 16 out of their 27 attempts from the field in shooting 59.3 percent.

UW-Stevens Point continued shooting the ball well and pushed their lead to a game high 13 points with 14:32 remaining in the half. Texas-Dallas Curtis Davis then took the game into his own hands and ripped off 14 of his game high 27 points in the second half points to keep the Comets hopes alive.

With 8:08 remaining Davis buried a three pointer to cut the deficit to three until Jordan Giordana (Kaukauna) answered back with a three of his own to give the Pointers a 62-56 lead. On the next possession Davis then hit his third three pointer of the half, giving his team a boost with 7:19 remaining in the game.

The Comets were able to keep the game close and did not let the Pointers gain more than a seven point lead the rest of the game. Texas-Dallas was forced to foul the Pointers in the final minutes and they connected on seven of eight attempts to seal the victory 74-67.

Point was led in the scoring column by Moses, shooting seven of 13 from the field, scoring 19 points. Jared Jenkins (Milwaukee) scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half, Jerrel Harris (Whitefish Bay) added 16 off the bench and Louis Hurd (Portage) added 10.  Ross Forman (Minneapolis, MN) grabbed a game high eight rebounds and Nick Krull (Marshall) pulled down six.

Curtis Davis shot 11-of-17 from the field and scored a game high 27 points. Scott Rodgers and Chris Barnes helped with 11 points each and Jordan Eppink added 10.

UW-Stevens Point (26-4) will now face off against Illinois Wesleyan Saturday evening in the Elite Eight round after they defeated Carthage 77-72 in the earlier game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
