Upsets abound in regional summer baseball playoff action Tuesday night

It was not a good night to be a highly-seeded team in the summer baseball playoffs, as despite all the #1 seeds advancing, numerous upsets occurred throughout the state. Sectional games take place Friday, with teams needing to pick up two wins to advance to the 2010 Summer Baseball State Tournament. To see the full WIAA bracket, click here.



Here's a look at each sectional and how teams fared: 

 

Sectional 1



Top-seed West Salem rallied from an early 5-1 deficit and held on to defeat 9th-seeded Lincoln (Alma Center) Tuesday night. #2 seed G-E-T had an easier go of it as the Redmen beat Independence-Gilmanton 5-0. #6 Cochrane-Fountain City upset #3 Arcadia 4-2 while Whitehall came in seeded fifth but managed to defeat #4 Blair-Taylor 4-0.



Sectional 2



New Holstein lived up to its top seed as the Huskies run-ruled Two Rivers 10-0 in six innings. The 4 vs. 5 matchup of Elkhart Lake-Blenbeulah and Howards Grove was suspended and will be completed today. The bottom half of the bracket was upset city. 2nd-seeded Plymouth went down 2-0 at the hands of #7 Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler while 6th-seeded Kiel held on after building an early 5-0 lead to defeat #3 Sheboygan Falls 5-4.



Sectional 3



West Bend West and Kewaskum received byes in this six-team sectional grouping. 4th-seeded Campbellsport won 11-1 over Oostburg in five innings while West Bend East edged Random Lake in the 3 vs. 6 matchup.



Sectional 4



Nicolet had little trouble as the sectional's top seed, winning 13-4 over Shorewood. 2nd-seeded Grafton was a 6-1 winner over Port Washignton. 3rd-seed Cedarburg was the only upset victim in this sectional, losing 5-3 to Brown Deer. #4 Whitefish Bay held serve against #5 Homestead with a 6-4 win.



Sectional 5



Top seed Menomonee Falls won easily over Pewaukee, 10-0 in six innings. #2 seed Brookfield East wasn't so fortunate however. The Owls from Slinger took down the Spartans 4-1. #3 Hamilton also was an upset loser, falling 4-3 to 6th-seeded Germantown. #4 Brookfield Central won 6-2 over #5 Arrowhead.



Sectional 6



Muskego was up to the challenge as the sectional's top seed, scoring a 10-6 win over Waukesha South in regional action. #2 Waukesha West held to win 5-2 over Catholic Memorial. Third-seeded Mukwonago went down 5-4 at the hands of sixth-seeded Kettle Moraine. In the 4 vs. 5 matchup, Whitnall edged Waukesha North by a final of 5-2.



Sectional 7



#1 New Berlin Eisenhower and #2 Marquette scored run-rule wins in their first games of the playoffs over Wauwatosa West and West Allis Central respectively. New Berlin West was one of the few #3 seeds to survive Tuesday, pulling out a 6-3 win over Pius. #4 seed Wauwatosa East wasn't so lucky however, falling 3-1 to West Allis Hale.



Sectional 8



Oak Creek was a run-rule winner over Saint Francis in the 1 vs. 8 match-up while #2 Cudahy defeated #7 Greendale 8-4. 4th-seeded South Milwaukee rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-4 win over #5 Saint Thomas More. Third-seeded Franklin had more than just a playoff win riding on their game versus #6 Greenfield, as a win would give legendary coach Jim Hughes sole possession of 1st place on the all-time coaching wins list in Wisconsin. Three solo home runs and a solid pitching performance from Brandon Widenfeld resulted in a 6-2 win and the record for Coach Hughes.
