A little revenge along with some camaraderie will be on the line tonight when the third Annual Home Talent All-Star Game will take place at Warner Park a.k.a. the Duck Pond at 7:05 p.m.
Sponsored jointly by the Home Talent Baseball League and the Madison Mallards Northwoods League team, the game will feature the East & Southeast Section All-Stars vs. the North & West Section All-Stars.
The East/Southeast team won 8-3 a year ago. The event made its debut in 2008 when the Home Talent League All-Stars competed against the U.S. Military All-Star Team in the "All-American Challenge," during the Northwoods League All-Star Fest hosted by the Madison Mallards.
The current format was adopted a year ago. Players were nominated from all 44 local teams to compete in the 7-inning game. The coaches were selected based on the teams that advanced to last year's championship round-robin playoffs.
Home Talent League Treasurer and North Section Director Kent Adler said the game has been a hit with the players and HTL fans since its inception.
"It's an honor to be able to showcase our league and for the teams and their fans to enjoy a fun time in a great setting," Adler said. "The Mallards will run their various promotions in between innings, which will be fun for everyone."
Tickets are general admission and priced at $7 (children under 5 years old are admitted free) and available at the Mallards Ticket Office. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. with the game beginning at 7:05 p.m.
The HTL is regarded as the oldest continuously operating league of its kind in the country. It is celebrating its 82nd season and has grown to 44 teams in South Central Wisconsin.
In order to participate in the league, players must live within a 6-mile radius of a given team. If a person s city currently does not have a team, this radius grows larger, and they can apply to play at other nearby communities.
"The All-Star Game was something we felt was long overdue," Adler said. "Steve Schmitt of the Mallards encouraged us to create the game and the Mallards' staff has done a great job supporting it and making it a special event at Warner Park."
