Wild finishes around the state and a special Doubleheader on Saturday

As the weather has heated up, so has the action around the state. Monday night Neenah won on a walk-off triple in the bottom of the seventh after Kaukauna had tied it up on a Jake Larsen two-run home run in the top of the frame. The floodgates opened in North Fond du Lac when a fly ball that would have been the third out was dropped and Lomira went on to score 10 sixth-inning unearned runs in a 25-7 victory. North Fondy had a 4-1 lead at the time of the error. Green Bay West's Chris Saldana provided a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to help the Wildcats to an 8-7 lead over Manitowoc Tuesday night.

Perhaps no finish was wilder than that between Division 4's top-ranked team Rosholt and #9 Port Edwards in a huge CWC-10 contest Monday night. Port Edwards was down 16-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning thanks in large part to two grand slams from Rosholt's Kyle McHugh (pictured). The Blackhawks chipped away however, and pulled out a dramatic 17-16 program-defining victory. "We put the ball in play and Rosholt made some mistakes that we capitalized on, and we came out on top," senior Jeff Reinke told the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune.

Rosholt wasn't the only top-ranked team to go down Monday night, as Mineral Point was defeated 11-2 by SWAL foe Southwestern just hours after ascending to the top spot in the Week 7 Coaches Poll.

Fond du Lac's Eric King tossed his second no-hitter of the season, and third of his career, in a rain-shortened 5-inning win over Appleton West on Monday. Speaking of no-hitters, the Somerset pitching staff has thrown three already this year. Perhaps the best and deepest staff in the state, three of the Spartans' top pitchers are profiled here. Dakota Belter tossed a 6-inning no-no Monday night (and was also a part of the second no-hitter the Spartans threw) and isn't even one of those mentioned in the article, giving you an idea of just how deep this staff is. Remember, you can check out the full list of no-hitters thrown this year as we will be keeping a running list.

In other feature articles from around the state, Green Bay Southwest is focused on building a winning culture. They've certainly been successful so far, racking up a 15-1 overall record and 12-1 mark in the Fox River Classic Conference. Patience, and a good surgeon, have helped Germantown's Tyler Thicke excel and get a chance to earn a scholarship at Indiana. Kyle Means of the Stevens Point Journal looks at some of the outstanding baseball (and softball) teams in the area. The Wisconsin State Journal and Madison.com have their area baseball preview available including a pre-season all-area team and some key questions that will need to get answered for local teams. Verona will play the first of two doubleheaders on Saturday at Stampfli Field in Verona, joining Edgewood College in staging a "Strike Out Cancer" Awareness Day to benefit the Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation of Madison. Finally, Royall's Joe Vicenda earned his 500th career victory recently and leads all active spring coaches in victories.
