Weekend Baseball Round-Up

The Superior Telegram finishes up their three-parter on former Superior High Schooler Adam Bozinski and his battle with a cancer that led to his left foot being amputated, but did not prevent him from pursuing his passion of playing baseball.

It was doubleheader day in the Wisconsin Valley Conference on Saturday.  Stevens Point and Marshfield split their matchup, as did Rhinelander and Wausau EastWausau West was the only team to get a sweep, taking both games against D.C. Everest.

Fox Valley Lutheran's prodigious offense was on display Friday in a 12-1 win over Freedom.  The Foxes sport a team batting average of .441 and average 11.7 runs per game.  Manitowoc Lutheran shut out Roncalli last Thursday behind pitcher Joe Jost (make sure to check out the picture with the article; is he trying knock the ball down?).  Friday night in Fox River Classic Conference action, De Pere was upset and given their first conference loss by Green Bay Southwest.  Here's a wrap-up of more Fox Valley area action from Friday night in the Fond du Lac Reporter.

Heading west across the state, Altoona took care of business once again, this time knocking off Eau Claire Regis.  Altoona remains undefeated and with the help of this win has moved into the top spot in the Division 2 WBCA Coaches Poll.  Long-time rivals Eau Claire North and Eau Claire Memorial are two solid programs that usually produce very competitive games.  Not Thurdsay night however, as the Old Abes of Memorial 10-run ruled the Huskies for North's first loss of the season.  La Crosse Aquinas senior Bobby Kachel has made big contributions on the gridiron (as the team's quarterback this year) and the hardwood (a key forward on their state tournament team), and he is continuing that success on the diamond where he hit a homer and drove in six in the Blugolds 15-1 win over Bangor on Saturday.

Speaking of three-sport success, Ladysmith's Joel Effertz is one of the state's best; look for a further profile of this outstanding athlete, along with several others across the state, in our May issue of WSN Illustrated.  Getting back to Aquinas for a second, sophomore Jimmy Coady is 16 for his last 20 after assuming a much bigger role in the leadoff spot this season.  Cousins Tyler and Blayne Kozelka form an outstanding battery for Prairie du Chien.

Onalaska's Jordan Guth has accepted a scholarship offer to UW-Milwaukee.  He choose the Panthers after weighing options for both baseball and hockey.

Finally, if you were in charge of the WIAA for a day, what if any changes would you make to high school baseball?  At a Madison-area Media Day recently co-hosted by madison.com and WisSports.net, The Capital Times' Adam Mertz posed that very question to local players and coaches.
