Welcome to this year's first installment of the Opening Pitch.  Here you'll find all the news, notes, and links that are fit to print from around the state.  We'll be updating the blog with stories several times a week, so make sure to check often.

Make sure to check our Scoreboard for scores from around the state.  If you notice any we're missing that you know, please send them to us at info@wissports.net.  Any coaches out there reading this, you should have gotten information last week about posting scores, stats, rosters, and schedules directly on our site.  If you didn't get the info or need help, please contact us as well.

The baseball season is barely a week old and we've already had multiple no-hitters thrown in the state.  West De Pere pitchers Donte Wilmet and Jon Schlemmer combined to throw six innings of no-hit ball against Ashwaubenon in a 10-0 victory.  The game was ended after six innings since the Phantoms were up by at least 10 runs.

We have an early leader for performance of the year, and I really doubt anyone will top it.  Rosholt's Kyle McHugh pitched a no-hitter, striking out 20 of the 21 batters he faced while also hitting a home run in a 2-0 win over Tri-CountyTri-County's Chris Dunn allowed only four hits, only five months after being diagnosed with cancer.  Hopefully, look for a more in-depth story on this amazing game and the outstanding performances of both players later this week on Dennis Semrau's On Deck blog.

Albany senior Tyler Bauman joined the party on Saturday, although he upped the ante with a perfect game performance in an 8-0 win over Faith Christian (Williams Bay).  Bauman struck out 16 in the contest.

Kimberly is one of the best schools in the state in producing quality sports programs, and their baseball team is a big example of that (two state title game appearances in a row, winning it all in 2007).  Of course they're pretty good at football too, winning the last two D2 state titles.  They're #1 in the pre-season coaches poll in baseball this year with a deep and talented roster.

Hortonville coach Don Williams is entering his 30th season at the school.  He's helped the Polar Bears to three state titles and is the fourth winningest active spring baseball coach.

In some early results around the state, Waupun swept Lomira in a double-header on Saturday; Mishicot scored six runs in the last inning to win over Kewaunee; Nekoosa (ranked fourth in D2) knocked off D3's top-ranked team Marathon; Oshkosh North went 1-2 over the weekend; Oshkosh West split their two games; and Sheboygan North dominated Valders, scoring 19 runs in the process.
