Hello Everyone – I was in Portage this afternoon where Columbus beat Portage 6-1. I ve been anxiously awaiting WIAA website updates all night here and now that most are posted I might as well make some comments.

I ll start with D-4. Highland nipped River Ridge 1-0 behind a necessary shutout from Laci Pustina I d guess. The Highland vs DeSoto match up at the sectional will be a a good one. If you re in luck, you will be in Luck for that sectional where McDonell will face off with Gilman for the right to play in the sectional final. Hurley beat Butternut/Glidden and will face Frederic in the other semi-final in Luck. Catholic Central got past defending state champion Williams Bay 9-0 and looks pretty good down in the sectional but could face another private school power in Assumption at Verona. Thorp plays Wausaukee in Bay Port while Rosholt takes on St. Mary Central. That will also be a good sectional to be watching.

In D-3 it will be Deerfield and Turner squaring off in the semi-final in Lancaster while the host site will take on Aquinas in the other side of that sectional. Lancaster beat Mineral Point today. The Arcadia Sectional is a tough one and the four teams there are Grantsburg, Spring Valley/Plum City, Park Falls and either Fall Creek or Regis. Over in Oakfield it s going to be Shoreland Lutheran vs Horicon and host Oakfield taking on Laconia. Defending state champion Sevatopol outlasted Algoma today10-7 while the other regional final was a high scoring game too at 9-8 in favor of Iola-Scandinavia. Stratford keeps making lots of noise in Division 3 as well and will get a chance to make more when it takes on Wabeno/Laona in the semi-final in Algoma. Stratford to Algoma is a haul my friends but it s a trip anyone would be happy to make.

In D-2 Rice Lake will play New Richmond. For me, that s an interesting matchup. Rice Lake is certainly battle tested after a season in the Big Rivers and their opponents in the Poynette Jamboree were not slouches either. I d love to be there. Columbus will take on Prairie du Chien in the sectional in Whitewater while top-ranked Monroe will take on Lakeside Lutheran or Jefferson (score not on site yet). A New Berlin Eisenhower vs Campbellsport matchup would be a great one at that sectional but both must pass stiff tests from Kettle Moraine Lutheran and defending state champion Union Grove. Oconto Falls has been the talk up there all season and they will take on Winneconne. Freedom and Southern Door is another great matchup. That is a tough sectional up and down.

In D-1 top ranked SPASH rolled over FVA member Oshkosh West 9-0 and certainly raised some eyebrows with that win. Appleton North just escaped Menasha 3-2 while Kimberly beat neighbor Kaukauna in somewhat of a slugfest 7-5. Sheboygan North and West Bend East will square off. Muskego pulled the upset with a convincing 5-1 win over Racine Case. Up north it was a Superior beating Chippewa Falls 2-1 and they will take on Hudson and the winner plays either DC Everest or Wausau West. Germantown and Homestead meet in a semi-final at Homestead. I think Verona is seeking and 8th straight state tournament appearance or something close to that. They will take on Beloit Memorial while second ranked Kenosha Bradford plays Badger. Baraboo knocked off unbeaten Madison Memorial on a tremendous home run off the bat of Danielle Vanderschaff for a 2-1 win. Tiffany Stanek got the win. Madison LaFollette, seeking a second straight trip to state beat Waunakee and will now take on either Middleton or Sun Prairie. De Pere nipped Pulaski up near Green Bay while Ashwaubenon advanced with a win over Shawano 3-2. It will be Appleton North taking on Appleton East at Appleton East in the other semi-final in that sectional. And wrapping it all up the sectional at Waukesha West features Waukesha North taking on Waukesha West while highly regarded Arrowhead plays Watertown.

Pick your winners. So far my predictions of last week are doing pretty well.

Call my cell phone on Thursday often to give me updates. The number is 608-219-2275. I ll have it on. Like John Roth of Columbus told Katie Stilwell and I today after the game in Portage. "The beauty of these cell phones is that you can be at an unlimited number of games all at the same time."

Have a great day!
