It s deep! It s got a chance!

Goodbye Mr. Dudley!

Hello Again Everyone!

I had to drive to Phillips, WI early yesterday morning and immediately return. On the return trip I couldn t help but notice girls softball action on Zenoff fields in Stevens Point. I had no time to stop and say hello though.

Another Mr. 200!

Brian Phelps, Head Coach at Gilman notched the 200th win of his coaching career on Saturday when his club beat Glenwood City 12-8  at the Gilman Invite. Congratulations to Brian. When we take a look at what conference Gilman plays in and a look at their non-conference schedule year in and year out, 200 wins is a great accomplishment. Gilman is in the Cloverbelt Conference. They are Division 4 school and have to bang heads with Altoona twice each year, Chippewa Falls McDonell, Fall Creek and more. Congratulations Brian!

Wayland Academy extended their record to 10-1 overall with a solid win over visiting Dominican from Whitefish Bay on Saturday.  Katie Corbin started out the offense in the second inning with an over the fence home run in left center field.  The Big Red scored 5 that inning and added 3 more in both the 4th and 6th innings.

Southwestern upset Mineral Point in Benton on Saturday by a score of 7-1. Annie Kahle had two hits while Amy Schuler had a 3x4 game. Audra Runde allowed just two hits. Mineral Point entered that game unbeaten in that conference. The win evened Southwestern s conference record at 6-6. Head Coach Tom Koeller had this to say after the game, "When you get ten hits off of a pitcher like Bree Reynolds, you should bronze the game balls and stick them up on a shelf.  Audra also turned in another fantastic game, striking out eight and only giving up 2 hits.  We looked sharp defensively and I love where this team is at heading into regionals."

Special Note to Coaches

I m one of the selectors for the Gatorade Player of the Year in Wisconsin. I ve chose to do things a bit differently from my end this year. If you have a player that you think is the most outstanding player in the state in 2008 – send me your thoughts and her stats and highlights. I ll use them in the process that takes place to choose that player. I need them in the next day or two. The information will have to come from the Player's Head Coach.

Tonight's Rule and Situation

Here is a situation for you to mull over. There are runners on first and second base with less than two outs. The batter hits a ball that strikes the runner going to third before the ball goes past the shortstop who had a play on the ball. The runner did not intentionally get hit by the ball. What is the proper call and how do you score the play in the scorebook?

Here are the updated Southeast Conference Standings for both Divisions.

Answer to Play Above:

Rule 5-1-1f covers this situation. It also appears in the Dead Ball Tables of the Rulebook (Page 47). Activity #13 – Penalty – Hit runner is out. Batter is awarded first base and credited with a hit. Others return to base occupied at tiome of interference. Runner at first would advance to second.

That play happened again last week. It also happened in Poynette s first game of the season at Wisconsin Heights.

Later this week I will be taking a look at all the regionals, their seedings and comment on all of them.

That s it for tonight!

Keep it Rising!

Bob
