Take two and hit to right!

Hello Everyone. It s already late as I start typing this Bulletin tonight. Doubleheaders on the road have a way of doing that to me. It was an interesting day for me in Lake Mills on the Lakeside Lutheran diamond. We split with them but I saw a kid get six consecutive hits in a row that totaled 10 total bases and included seven RBI. I also saw a kid that I worked with all winter at Wednesday night pitching clinics in Poynette get a win against us, 6-5. She tossed a great game as all five of our runs were unearned. All six of their s were too.

To learn how to compute softball percentages correctly one just has to refer to page 80 of the NFHS rule book. Rule 10-1-2 includes six stat categories with percentages and how to compute them. Part "e" covers slugging percentage and that is total bases divided by official at bats. That s pretty easy. Now consider this: I know of a player who has a slugging percentage of 1.000. No fooling, no kidding. She is batting .567 with an on base percentage of .660 in the #3 spot. She has 60 total bases in 60 official at bats. She has 34 hits, 7 doubles, 3 triples and 5 home runs. I don t normally write about the players I coach in Poynette but this one deserves mentioning. It s our all state catcher Madeline Dugolenski. Today she went 5x5 with a single, two doubles and a home run for 10 total bases in the first game of a twinbill. She then went 2x3 in the second game and drew a base on balls. The other at bat had the Lakeside Lutheran centerfielder at the fence in right center on a high, towering blast that was caught.

Here are some of today s statewide highlights as gleaned from the Reports page on the WSN softball website.

Eau Claire North beat Chippewa Falls today 2-1 --- Hudson nipped Menomonie 2-1 --- Luther nipped Westby in the Coulee 1-0 --

Kenosha Bradford nipped Racine Case again 1-0 as Alyssa Roberts tossed a no-hitter and fanned 13 for Bradford. Alyssa Koch absorbed the loss, fanning 10 and allowing one run and one hit.

I m hearing stories of a few crazy, zany plays and situations that have occurred statewide but not nearly as many as in previous years. I know the reason is not that they are not taking place but that the reporting is much, much different than before. People are not sending me e-mails like the past seven years so I don t hear as much as I did before. That concerns me. Send me those plays, your questions about rules and situations so I can share them with everyone in the state.

Park Falls clinched at least a share of the Lumberjack Conference championship at 9-1 with a 10-0 win over Lakeland. The Cards rapped 17 hits, including five doubles. Kelsey Christianson was three-for-four with two doubles and Kelsey Walasek was three-for-four. Maddie Lamb, Tiffany Zaicke and Libby Slack had two hits each. All nine batters in the Cardinals' line-up had hits.

Highland nipped River Ridge 4-3 in the Six Rivers West. Grantsburg just got by St. Croix Falls 2-0 in the Lakeland West. Madison Memorial remained unbeaten, squeaking by Madison East 2-0.

Brookwood won the Scenic Bluffs title today with a tight 2-1 win over Bangor.

New Richmond Tigers are the Middle Border Conference Champions after knocking off Ellsworth tonight by a score of 13-1. Nikki Singerhouse threw a 1 hitter. Shoreland Lutheran maintained their share of the conference lead with a 9-0 win over Racine Lutheran.

Katy Warren of Brookfield Central singled home Lindsey Gohr in the bottom of the 7th to defeat Hamilton 4-3. The single spoiled a good pitching performance by Chelsea Spangenberg of Hamilton. Arrowhead nipped Waukesha North 5-2 and remains on the closely watched list in D-1.

Albany nipped Pecatonica 2-1. Pec s Mallory Massey threw a 2 hitter - but one was crushed by Megan Schultz over the left-center field fence in the sixth, which turned out to be the winning run. Pec threatened in the botton of the seventh, but Albany made the plays to hold on for the victory.

That s about it for tonight.

Keep it Rising!

Bob
