And the sun came out today – there s new grass on the field!

Lots and lots of games are taking place with many of them being doubleheaders as the early season games got pushed back onto the second date that many teams were slated to play. With so many games in so few days there are apt to be some teams getting knocked off and the rankings will show that next week.

Here are few highlights from Tuesday action. I gleaned this information off the Reports page of the wissports.net website.

Undefeated Freedom and Winneconne got together in a very well played game by both teams. Freedom came out with a 2-0 victory with a one out triple by Nicole Bowers with one out and one on to give Freedom a 1-0 lead, Bowers then scored on a passed ball to end all the scoring for the game. Both Winneconne and Freedom loaded the bases in the first 3 innings, but Curtis and Schuh both worked out of the jams. Schuh was great striking out 13 Winneconne batters. Both Winneconne and Freedom have key dates this week against Little Chute, which is 9-1 in the Eastern Valley and 10-1 overall. Those dates should really show what teams are the top ones in the Eastern Valley and in the D2 rankings (where Little Chute just failed to make the top 15 last week).

McDonell Central and Gilman locked up in a great game today in the north. Gilman plated a pair of runs in the third but McDonell Central scored 3 runs in the 5th inning to take the lead. Both teams had four hits. Leading hitter for McDonell was Jess Freagon with a triple to drive in 2 runs. In the 3 games Jess is 6 for 11 with 1 triple and 3 doubles. Ashley Meinen has now pitched all 21 innings of the 3 games giving up a total of 2 runs, 1 earned run, with 4 walks, and 33 strikeouts for the 3 games.

At Kenosha Bradford it s not just Alyssa Roberts in the circle. Today Ali Brems toed the pitchers plate for Bradford and fanned 14 against South Milwaukee.

Poynette s Carmelia Wilson scattered three hits as Poynette edged Belleville 3-0 in Belleville. Wilson was aided by some nice defensive plays by her teammates who played most of the game with a third sacker, two shortstops, no second sacker and two leftfielders. Sometimes playing things straight-up isn t the best way on a given night to play the game. Belleville s coaching staff has really upped the level of competiveness there. That s a great thing to see happen for the sport no matter where it takes place. The tougher the competition at as many schools as we can get makes the game better statewide.

Arcadia rolled 10-1 over Luther today in Coulee Conference action. Arcadia is ranked 2nd in Division 2 while Luther entered the week as the #8 ranked team.

The following game interested me because we played Logan in Portage on Saturday where Michelle Mueller fanned 13 or 14 of us, allowed two hits and blasted a grand slam to put the game out of reach for us.

Logan ............................ 202 000 1    5  8  2

LC Central .................... 301 200 0    6  7  3

WP: Kayla McCluskey, La Crosse Central: 6 IP; 3 SO; 1 W

Michelle Mueller, La Crosse Logan: 6 IP; 5 SO; 1 W

Courtney Ritchie, La Crosse Central: 1 IP; 0 SO; 0 W

La Crosse Central:  Becky Robson  2-2,  1 3B,  1 R, 2 RBI;  Kenisha McGuire  2-4,  1 3B,  2 RBI;  Hannah Mickelson  1-2,  2 R, ;

La Crosse Logan:  Michelle Mueller  2-4,  1 HR,  2 R, 2 RBI;

La Crosse Central Notes: Kenisha McGuire hit a 2 run triple in the 4th inning to provide the margin of victory in a 6-5 Central win over Arch-Rival Logan. Michelle Mueller led the Rangers with a 2 run Homerun in the 3rd and threw a 7 hitter on the mound, but Central's Kayla McCluskey got the big outs when she needed them and Courtney Ritchie threw the 7th for her 4th save of the year.

I need your help. I m looking for a short list of very good freshman players in the state. If you have one or more on your team, in your conference, or area – let me know right away.

Have a great day!

Keep it Rising!
