AMHERST -- The Pacelli and Amherst softball teams met Monday, and both were looking to see where the momentum, or lack of momentum from pevious games would take them. Quite a few questions were answered during Pacelli's 9-2 win. If it had came through on a couple bases loaded opportunities, Pacelli could have made this a quicker day at the park. Still, Cardinals coach Ann Molski was pleased with her team's effort. "We have to capitalize on that better," Molski said. "Kate (Glodowski) had some nice pitches, but her movement threw them off until the sixth inning." Amherst's Glodowski continues to find herself on the mound, and was able to cut her walks down from 14 on Friday, to seven against Pacelli. Amherst coach Tim Pederson said his pitcher clearly improved from her first game. "(Kate) wanted it more today," Pederson said. "She was a little upset when I pulled her in the last inning. She wants the ball and she'll do it. It's her first year pitching so it's going to be a lot different for her." Glodowski was strong at the plate, going 3 for 4 and Jenna Pitt and Claire Glodowski each drove in runs early in the game. Pacelli scored two runs each in the second and third inning to take the lead in the game. Holding a 5-2 lead in the sixth, the Cardinals broke through with run-scoring singles by Emily Klismith and Alyssa Schulist. A two-run single by Pam Bowden brought home the last of the four runs scored in the inning.

Shoreland Lutheran moved to 3-0 with a win over Racine Park Monday afternoon. Freshmen shortstop, Katie Morman, continued her hot start to the season going 2 for 4 with a triple and 3 RBI. The Pacers got on the board in the top of the 1st when Megan Peterson led off the game with a triple to center. Morman drove her home with a single. With Morman on 3rd with one out, Brittanny Bahr laid down a sacrifice squeeze to bring home the 2nd run of the inning. Racine Park looked to answer in their half of the 1st. Lauren Kamm led off with a single and Mary Nordstrom was granted 1st on catcher s interference. Megan Naegeli then drove home Kamm with a single to center. That was all the Panthers were able to muster in the inning thanks to an unassisted double play by senior second sacker Megan Peterson. The Pacers responded with another two runs in the top of the 2nd. Rochelle Willkomm drew a lead-off walk and then was brought home on a triple by sophomore Melissa Luebbers. Peterson also drew a walk and the Pacers executed a 1st and 3rd situation to bring home another run. Shoreland Junior pitcher Rochelle Willkomm struck out the side in the 2nd. The scoring continued for the Pacers in the 3rd when sophomore catcher Brittanny Bahr was driven home by older sister Alyssa Bahr on a double crushed down the left field line. Park would not go away. Centerfielder Jessica Kirt led off with a walk and then catcher Mary Nordstrom brought hit her in and third baseman Megan Burgess followed with an RBI single of her own. The Pacers continued to crush the ball, but the Kirt and left fielder, Stefanie Meier, were busy all afternoon chasing down 7 fly ball putouts. Shoreland was able to put together a two-out rally in the 6th when Renee Wright reached on a single and Peterson on a walk. Morman came through in the clutch again and bombed a triple down the left field line bringing in two. Sophomore Kim Gall beat out an infield single bringing in Morman. Park looked to rally in the 7th with two on and no out, but Peterson initiated another double play and a pop fly to 3rd ended the game. Shoreland Lutheran now looks forward to 7 days in Orlando, FL where they will play three games at Disney against teams from New York and Washington, DC.

Spencer 4, Loyal 3 (8 innings)

SPENCER -- Pitcher Taylor Johnson kept her Spencer teammates in a battle for eight innings with perennial power Loyal before she was rewarded with a 4-3 win in extra-innings. Spencer's Emily Seefeld started off the Rockets' eighth with a ground ball that the Greyhounds' infield couldn't handle and ended up safely on first. Loyal's workhorse hurler Mindy Luttrop, promptly struck out the next Rocket before yeilding an infield single to Megan Cain. Another Luttropp strikeout brought new Rocket third basemen Beth Brodziski to the plate. Brodziski hit a hard grounder to the right of the shortstop who couldn't make a strong throw. Brodziski beat the throw and the Rockets had their win. "It felt great to have the game winning hit," said Brodziski. I was really nervous, but I just went up there and was confident and did my best. The pitch was there and I hit it." If Johnson kept the Rockets buoyed for their win, it was Luttropp who supplied the gas for the Greyhounds' engine, as she mowed down 12 Rockets while yielding just seven hits. The Rockets did jump on Luttropp from the get-go, piling up three first inning runs on three hits including a double by senior first baseman Whitley Phillips. Kelli Esselman had two RBI in the first inning to stake the Rockets to a lead. Johnson had her way with the Greyhounds until the third when Loyal bounced back with three runs of its own. Bridgett Hera singled and stole second base, and then Rachel Weyer drove in Hera with a single before stealing second. Ashley Howard's single scored Weyer, and later scored on Luttropp's groundout. Luttropp held the Rockets scoreless through the middle innings setting down nine consecutive Rockets in the first four innings. Johnson knuckled down and retired 12 straight Greyhounds en route to the win. Samantha and Rachel Weyer each had two hits for Loyal, and Spencer's Megan Cain went 1 for 2 for the Rockets with two walks and a pair of stolen bases.

Our young team dominated the entire game until the 7th and then a couple of hits by Mondovi and a few mental breakdowns brought them right back in it. We give Mondovi a lot of credit for not quitting and coming back like they did, they fought hard. We need to finish games. I thought it was a good thing for our girls to have some pressure put on them, and to see how they would react. I think that they can learn from yesterday. We had a lot of tough fans come out to see our home opener, more than I figured would tough it out. Mondovi Brought quite a crowd also. Mishicot's offense heats up against Wrightstown -Indians tally 13 hits to win Olympian Conference opener

By Steve Clark

Herald Times Reporter

MISHICOT — The Mishicot softball team apparently just need the temperatures to get cold for their bats to heat up.

After totaling just six hits in their first two games combined, the Indians had six players rack up two hits apiece and finished with 13 overall in a 14-5 Olympian Conference victory over Wrightstown on a frigid Thursday afternoon that had the wind-chill factor in the teens at the start of the game.

"It felt good to finally hit," said sophomore Kasey Englebrecht, one of the Indians to finish with two hits — both doubles. "During practice we just worked really hard on hitting, and our coaches really showed us the right way to do it. It really helped."

And Mishicot (1-2 overall, 1-0 in the OC) wasn't just making contact and dribbling balls into empty spaces.

Five of the Indians' hits went for extra bases, led by Englebrecht's two doubles. Melissa Sattler also boomed a double, while Stephanie Wiebensohn and Lindsay Van Vonderen each recorded triples.

"I was going to go home, but coach had to stop me," Van Vonderen joked with Mishicot head coach Larry Feest about her two-run triple in the fourth inning that one-hopped the right-center field fence. "I got that hit, and it was just exhilarating."

As good as Mishicot felt about its offense at the end of the game, the key to getting that feeling came at the start.

After Wiebensohn fanned two batters in retiring the side in order in the top of the first inning, the Indians erupted for six runs in the bottom of the frame and never trailed.

Wiebensohn started the inning with a walk, while Jenny Morreau followed by reaching on a fielder's choice. After Sarah Biely's single loaded the bases, Sattler plated two runs with a single to left field, while Biely scampered home — and Sattler advanced all the way to third — on a Wrightstown error.

Van Vonderen, who finished with a team-best four RBIs, then drove in Sattler with a sacrifice fly, while Megan Hischke and Wiebensohn also added RBI-singles in the frame.

"(The first inning was) huge for the girls, you could tell. They got up there and hit the first couple, and then it gets contagious," Feest said. "Then everyone got up there and started swinging. And it wasn't just to hit the ball, but it was to drive the ball to a gap and hit the hole."

Added Van Vonderen: "It did (boost everybody's confidence). It really proved that we can actually hit. Then everybody is pumped up and more confident and just having fun out there."

The Tigers (0-2 overall, 0-2 in the OC) came back with a run in the top of the second on an RBI-single by Emma Smits, but Mishicot got an RBI-single from Van Vonderen and a run-scoring double by Englebrecht in the bottom of the inning to pull ahead 8-1.

The Indians' next big inning came in the fourth when Van Vonderen drove in Biely and Sattler with her line-shot triple, before scoring on Ashlee Skarda's single. Englebrecht, who also drew two walks and reached base in all four plate appearances, then scored on Emily Dirkmann's groundout to cap the inning with Mishicot leading, 12-2.

Wrightstown took advantage of a pair of Mishicot errors to plate two runs in the top of the fifth to extend the game and then added another in the sixth to trim the Indians' lead to 12-5.

"We had a little letdown when they came back, and that's why we called a timeout to talk about it," Feest said of a fifth-inning trip to the mound. "I think they thought they had the game wrapped up because they were looking at that 10-run rule, and we had to get back and get focused and get the win."

Englebrecht doubled and scored on a Skarda single to start a two-run sixth inning that boosted Mishicot's lead back to nine, and Wiebensohn pitched around a one-out single in the seventh to close out the win.

Wiebensohn fanned eight and walked only three in earning the complete-game win. Only three of the runs she gave up were earned, despite a solid defensive effort by the Indians.

"(Our defense) is definitely a strength. I think we have really good infielders and outfielders," said Englebrecht, the third baseman, who had six assists and two putouts, and started a double play in the sixth inning. "(Our pitchers don't walk many hitters), and that really helps a lot, too."

And even though Mishicot dropped a pair of non-conference games to start the season, getting a win in its conference opener is definitely a boost for the team's confidence.

"The first two games just gave us some experience. We felt like coming into tonight we were 0-0, and we got the win and now we're 1-0," Feest said. "I thought Wrightstown was a very good team, pitching-wise and defensively, but we just came out and hit the ball today. That's what it was."

Notes: The Mishicot players with two hits in the game were Wiebensohn, Biely, Sattler, Van Vonderen, Englebrecht and Skarda. ... Shoreland Lutheran moved to 4-0 this morning with a gritty victory over St. Mary s from Buffalo, NY. St. Mary s scored an unearned run in the top of the 1st to get the early lead. They added a 2nd run in the top of the 4th with a lead off single and a stolen base followed by 2 infield ground outs that advanced Simmuth home. St. Mary s pitcher Katrina Lubecki had a perfect game through the first time of the Shoreland lineup, but the Pacer bats warmed up the second time through the lineup. Senior 2nd Baseman, Megan Peterson, reached by error and then freshman shortstop, Katie Morman blazed a triple down the left field line scoring Peterson. Morman then scored on a ground out by Brittanny Bahr tying the game at two. With two outs the Pacers strung together 3 singles by Kim Gall, Rochelle Willkomm and Melissa Luebbers which brought in the 3rd run of the inning. Again with 2 outs in the 5th the Pacers struck again. This time Morman led it off with a single. Sophomore catcher, Brittanny Bahr, then reached on error. Older sister Alyssa Bahr then plunked a Texas-league blooper into short right-center scoring both runners. St. Mary s battled back and scored two runs in the 6th thanks to shaky defense by Shoreland. 2 errors and 2 singles plated 2 runs. Junior pitcher, Rochelle Willkomm then forced a pop out to 2nd base with the tying run at 3rd. St. Mary s threatened to tie the score again in the 7th when Lubecki laced a double to right-center. Willkomm again pitched out of it by forcing a fly out to 2nd and striking out the final batter of the game.
