With one out in the third, Kasey Schwartzmiller singled to left. Hillary Brummond followed with a single up the middle. The runners moved up to second and third on a ground out to first by Chelsea Jorgensen. Abbie Mueller poked a two-out single to right to record two more RBIs and give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. Mayville added another run in the fourth with a one out single by Bethany Hurst. Keshia Muche then beat out a bunt-and-run. On the play, with Hurst heading to third, a wild throw sailed into left and allowed Hurst to score on the play. One more insurance run was added in the fifth on a one-out single by Chelsea Jorgensen, followed by a single up the middle by Abbie Mueller, followed by a flare to center by Ariel Wald. ROSHOLT -- Bowler welcomed Rosholt softball back to the Central Wisconsin Conference Small Division in the season opener for both teams Thursday. It didn't take long for the Panthers to find out they will be lower on the conference totem pole than the Hornets. Rosholt used a 10-run fourth inning to defeat Bowler 15-1 in five innings. The reigning champions of the CWC Large, who moved back to the Small after a four-year absence, liked this matchup for a season opener, but not necessarily because it would be an easy win. "Coming into the small conference, we really don't know what to expect," Rosholt starting pitcher Anna Zdroik said. "It was nice to have a good controlled game. It wasn't like rivals or anything for your first game, that can always be tough." The Panthers proved to be a tough out in the top of the first. Zdroik ended the game with 11 strikeouts in a complete-game two-hitter. She struggled in the first inning, giving up a single and three walks that led to a run scored by Bowler leadoff hitter Brittney Henry. "I wasn't expecting such a small strike zone, and I had to adjust," Zdroik said. "(The umpire) liked a low strike zone and I went with it. In the end, it helped a lot, I just had to work through it." Zdroik made the necessary adjustments and proved to be too much for a young Panthers squad, which fields no seniors. Zdroik struck out the last three batters of the first inning and struck out the side in the second. "I'm proud of how our girls played, we got a lot of new people," Bowler coach David Graves said. "We really only had three or four hitters that could be confident against (Zdroik)." Rosholt got four runs in the bottom of the first, all recorded without a hit, as the Hornets scored off three errors and a walk. Senior Dream Carlson set the tone with aggressive baserunning, stealing second base and went to third on a bad throw. Carlson would score off a dropped fly ball by Henry. Bowler switched pitchers in the fourth inning, and new pitcher Rebecca Graves walked her first three batters. Tanya Kluck drilled a two-run double to give the Hornets a 9-1 lead to break the game open. Two batters later, another two-run double by Alyssa Macht made the score 11-1 and the rout was on. "They had enough," Rosholt coach Tom Fields said. "We don't want to play with teams, we just want to take it to them when we can and get it over with."

Rosholt's record is 1-0

Westfield (0-3) had three hits in the bottom half of the seventh and used two Westfield errors to come close before Delong ended it. "She fielded it clean, made a nice throw to first and it was finally over," said Markesan coach Brian Cahoon. Sammi Jo Kirst went 3-for-5 to lead Markesan on its way to 14 hits. Stephanie Dougherty and Kristina Krueger both had two hits for the Hornets. Emily Hein pitched for the victory, going all seven innings to allow 12 hits and four walks. She struck out three. Softball: Greenwood opens season with a win beats Alma 5-1

By Jake Miller

Marshfield News-Herald

Jmiller2@Gannett.com

GREENWOOD -- Greenwood pitcher Jennifer Herdrich has laid the groundwork to help stabilize her coach's preseason concerns. Heading into Tuesday's season opener, Greenwood coach Brenda Learman anxiously awaited the performance she would receive from her relatively inexperienced pitcher. The result: a complete-game effort in a 5-1 nonconference win against Alma, in which Herdrich allowed just four hits, while striking out five and walking two. Alma scored its lone run in the top of the seventh when Alex Johnson drove in Samantha Treinen with a two-out double. "I thought our pitching did very well," Learman said. "And that's one thing I was a little worried about." Herdrich, who complemented her arm with a 3 for 4 offensive effort, received a consistent effort from her defense through six innings, particularly from Briana Brey (third base) and Kaitlin Kirn (shortstop) who combined for five assists and played crisp on the left side. Kirn, an all-Eastern Cloverbelt Conference second-team shortstop last season, was impressed with Herdrich's first start of the year. "She's doing a really good job," Kirn said. "She's very accurate; she steps in to her pitches." Both offenses struggled at the plate, but Alma pitcher Whitney Hawes' early control issues helped Greenwood climb out to a 2-0 lead after two innings. With a three-walk first, Hawes, who struck out five and issued six walks during three innings of work, walked in a run and allowed another run to score in the second on a wild pitch. Alma brought in Alyssa Brakke to start the fourth, but after a clean inning Brakke gave up three runs over the next two. Finally discovering its offense, Greenwood cushioned its lead in the fifth inning after Kirn laced a one-out triple into left center to kick off a three-hit, two-run inning. "It was nice to see her get a good hit," Learman said. "She's been wanting to get one." After seeing her offense stumble, while her defense glistened in the nonconference win, Learman was pleased to get a chance to see what Greenwood needs to work on before the season hits full stride. "It just felt good to play outside," Learman said. "Just to kind of learn what we need to work on. Not necessarily the win-loss of it, just the actual playing of the game."

A very well played early season matchup. Central had a chance in the 1st after a leadoff double, but after reaching 3rd on a wild pitch, McGuire was stranded. Key play in the inning was with 2 outs when Jessa Pfennig was gunned out at 1st base from right field to prevent the run from scoring. Holmen's 1st batter reached by a walk, then Ritchie set down 12 straight, carrying a no-hitter into the 6th inning. The game ended in classic fastpitch fashion. After reaching on an error, The Holmen runner was sacrificed to 2nd, sacrificed to 3rd and scored on a 2-out shot to left center. Only 3 walks and 2 errors total in the game. Pretty amazing since neither team had more than 2 practices on dirt before the game.
