2009 Recap

Divine Savior Holy Angels returned to prominence in the Greater Metro last season, going a perfect 7-0 in regular season play and winning the conference tournament. The Dashers lost just seven matches total, including in the Division 1 State quarterfinals to a pesky Burlington squad to finish the year an impressive 36-7. Second-place Menomonee Falls lost the Greater Metro opening bash against DSHA, but was sent north come WIAA tournament time. The Indians were a three-seed and was swept by State qualifier Nicolet in the Sectional semifinals. Brookfield Central earned a Sectional final berth before being swept by eventual State champion Muskego, while Brookfield East was knocked out of the Sectional semifinals by the same team.

2010 Season Outlook:

Two teams have combined to win the Greater Metro Conference the past nine seasons-- DSHA and Menomonee Falls. In fact, West Allis Hale is the only non-DSHA/Falls team to win the GMC Tournament title in that span. In what should be another two-team race to league honors, Divine Savior Holy Angels gets the nod-- the Dashers welcome back four starters and five players who saw considerable court time at last year's State quarterfinal. Senior setter Amanda Dettmann, an All-State Second Team nominee last season, could be the league's preseason Player of the Year as DSHA's floor general. Dettman, outside hitter Kathleen Brennan and Libero Mary Beste were three digging leaders last season and should provide what head coach Darrell Frank anticipates as "strong defense". The Dashers will need to find some go-to attackers this season, as they'll need to replace All-State Honorable Mentions Kelly Brandenburg and middle Brigitta Siladi, as well as fellow middle Lauren Heeg.

Menomonee Falls came in a close second last season, losing 3-2 against the league champs. This season, Falls has high hopes to win its eighth league title in the past 10 seasons, as it won six straight from 2003 to 2008. The Indians get back an experienced squad plumb with talent in multiple positions. Senior Libero Taylor Golabowski, First Team All-Greater Metro last season, will anchor the back row and headlines a team ripe with young talent. Senior Becca Fuchs, an All-Conference Second Team nominee, sophomore Melissa Fuchs and senior Sarah Wildish will work the outsides, while Honorable Mention Chelsea Lea will be a force in the middle. Falls played with a chip on its shoulder most of the year after that early loss, and will get a chance to sweeten it up a bit against the Dashers August 31.

Brookfield Central head coach Scott Spiess has seven players with varsity experience returning, including a pair of All-Conference nominees in Annie Evanich and Britney Held. "We will have a lot of physical athletes at the net, hitting off an experienced setter," Spiess said. That setter is Mallory O'Halloran, who will be a veteran three-year varsity setter for the Lancers. Though Spiess admits his squad might need to work the defensive drills early this season to get Central more defensive-minded. "We lost our two best ball control players to graduation though and will need multiple players to step up their play in serve receive in order to be competitive."

Brookfield East also has a star at setter in the form of junior Danie Walkowaik, who will start for the second straight season. Yet unlike East's crosstown rival, serve receive and defense are aspects head coach Chris Polowy said should be team strengths. "We have strong team unity, but will need to find a go-to player in pressure situations," Polowy said. That go-to could come in the form of senior Kimberly Boritzke, who earned All-Conference Honorable Mention last season hitting outside for the Spartans.

Hamilton
almost pulled off a big upset to open last season's GMC campaign, pushing Brookfield East to five games. If the Chargers can prove they can hang with some of the league's better squads, they may be able to pick off a few league opponents and improve on last year's 6-16 overall record. Look for Morgan Reimer to be a solid floor leader as the Hamilton's steady hands. West Allis Hale knocked off Hamilton last year without any All-Conference representatives, while Wauwatosa East swept West Allis Central to stay out of the Greater Metro cellar. Hale, Tosa East and Central will all need to find some girls to step up big in order to climb the league ladder.
