Thursday night was the Division 1 girls time to shine, as the field of 115 was cut to 64. Overall, things went pretty smoothly for the top seeds, with just seven lower-ranked teams advancing. Here is the rundown.

Bust out the Brooms

The majority of last night's matches featured a 3-0 sweep--34 of the 51 to be exact.

Pair of double-digit seeds move on

In the Waunakee Sectional, #11 La Crosse Logan made the hike to the west side of Madison to play #6 Memorial for its first round matchup. The drive was worth it though, as the Rangers stole a 3-1 victory over the Spartans by scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, and 25-15. Logan will make a return trip to the state's capital Saturday, as it will play #3 LaFollette.

In the Fox Valley, a clash of Appleton foes saw #10 West pulling off a thrilling five-set upset over #7 North. North had swept West earlier this season in FVA action. West won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-17 before losing the next pair 11-25 and 23-25. The Terrors' final 15-9 set win sealed the upset and advances them to the regional final where they will play one-loss and #2 Green Bay Preble.

Other coin-flips landing as "upsets"

The list of #9-ranked teams beating #8-ranked teams (*or in Sectional 1, #5 beating #4) is relatively short, but here it is.

Bay Port 3, Green Bay East 2

Eau Claire Memorial 3, Menomonie 0*

Greendale 3, Racine Horlick 1

Milwaukee Lifelong Learning/Ronald Reagan 3, Milwaukee South 2

Sheboygan North 3, Stevens Point 0

One heckuva sectional

Sectional 5, hosted by Waukesha West is outrageously stacked with talent. Of the eight teams remaining, five are ranked in the top-15 of the latest WSN poll. No. 9-ranked and #3-seeded Menomonee Falls will host No. 12/#6 Arrowhead in what is arguably the most decorated of Saturday s regional final matches. The winner will play whoever survives a tilt between No. 4/#2 Nicolet and #7 Cedarburg. In the top half of the bracket, #5 Germantown will travel to No. 13/#4 Homestead, a team the Warhawks beat just a week ago, and No. 1/#1 Watertown will host fellow Little Ten foe and #8 Oconomowoc.

Divisions 2-4 are up next, as those three will play their second rounds Friday before  all four play their regional final matches Saturday night.
