There's a Bleacher at Kettle Moraine High School with Your Name on It

There's plenty to be encouraged about when it comes to high school volleyball in this state. We'll name just three off the top of our head:

1. We have one of the top young players in the world in Jeremy Dejno. The New Berlin United senior was a key contributor in USA's recent performance in Italy, which included an upset victory over Iran in the very first game. And his teammate on that globetrotting squad, Nick Gibson (Shorewood '09), will be playing at The Ohio State University this year.

2. The Badgers have already received verbals from two outstanding juniors in the state: middle Kelli Browning of Catholic Memorial and outside Crystal Graff of Madison La Follette. We're confident these homegrown stars will make key contributions within these borders for years to come.

3. The volleyball talent pool is becoming more and more dispersed geographically. Players like Cochrane-Fountain City's Erica Willadsen, who leads the state in hitting percentage, and Grantsburg's Kortney Morrin, are both playing outstanding volleyball in areas not traditionally associated with the sport.

So now that we've been encouraged, maybe we can return the favor on Wednesday night. Here's what we have in mind: We were checking out the Wisconsin Boys thread on Volleyball Magazine's discussion forum earlier today and noticed a discouraging comment. One player was very much looking forward to Wednesday's classic match between Kettle Moraine and Catholic Memorial, but feared the attendance would be sub-par.

Well, what are we gonna do about it, Wisconsin?

Is it crazy to think that we as a volleyball community could double or triple his predicted attendance of "about 30 including parents"? How about an even 100? 150? If you're associated with the Kettle Moraine or Catholic Memorial girls programs, would you consider heading on over to Kettle Moraine at 5:30 on Wednesday evening to help fill the seats? Or if you live within driving distance and don't have your own volleyball to watch that night (which would, of course, be an excused absence), will you make the trip?

Whaddya think? Let us know if you're interested in watching the team that finished first in the KM Invite this weekend (Catholic Memorial) take on the team that finished fourth. Let us know if you're interested in supporting boys volleyball in this state. Or let us know if we're simply the most hopelessly naive souls on the planet.
