Behind 16 points from senior KJ Evans (pictured) and a furious 24-14 first quarter, Beloit Memorial upset the top-ranked team in Division 1 and Big Eight frontrunner Madison East Friday night 69-62. Leketreius Broomfield added 18 points for the Knights, who held on for the home victory after ahead by just three after the third quarter.

"It takes a total team effort to beat a team like that," Beloit coach Jay Bryant told the Wisconsin State Journal. "We came out focused and KJ did everything for us tonight. I can't say enough about the performance he had."

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Evans said. "They're a great team, so we knew it would take a lot. We're glad we were able to pull it off."

With the win, Beloit moves into a third-place tie with Middleton, a team that has already beaten the Knights this season. Beloit will finish up its Big Eight slate against La Follette and West before a tough stretch of Memorial, Verona, Middleton and Sun Prairie.

Honorable Mention:

Newman (Girls Basketball): Beating the top ranked team in the state is one thing, but to do so when that team is undefeated and in your own conference is another. Newman, after racing out to a 14-3 lead after the first quarter, needed a huge 16-7 fourth quarter stand to turn back top-ranked Assumption 47-45 on the road Friday night. The Cardinals got big contributions from juniors Taylor Thomas and Erica Hartke, who scored 16 and 15 points respectively.

Matthew Mitch, Pacelli (Boys Hockey): Head Coach Rusty Mitch was searching for someone on his second line to step up, and may just have found it last Tuesday. Mitch, a freshman Forward, recorded a breakout performance of four goals in a 9-1 win over the McDonnell/Regis Co-op and helped Pacelli to one of its best starts in school history at 11-5.

Alice & Lily Cranston, St. Croix Valley (Girls Hockey): The Cranston sisters had a big week for the Fusion, recording five goals in a 6-2 win at Chippewa Falls and four scores in a 7-4 win against the St. Paul Blades. Junior Alice was the big scorer in Thursday's matchup with the Blades, recording four goals, while senior Lily notched a pair of assists on the night. Saturday against Big Rivers foe Chi-Hi, Lily blasted three goals while Alice added two for herself. The pair are daughters of head coach Mark Cranston, and are the points leaders for the top-ranked team in the state.
