The Hudson girls hockey team achieved a feat Thursday that no team has done for nearly two years.

In the final Big Rivers Conference showdown against top-ranked St. Croix Valley, the Raiders scored three second-period goals and held on to beat the Fusion 4-2. The loss snapped a 50-game winning streak against Wisconsin opponents for the Fusion, who hadn't lost since Feb. 28, 2008.

While St. Croix Valley had already clinched its third consecutive BRC title coming into the matchup, fifth-ranked Hudson, also a sectional opponent, showed it can play with the state's finest.

Senior forward Abby Singerhouse broke open the scoring with a Hudson goal at the 3:52 mark of the second period on assists from senior Amy Rose Hutchinson and sophomore Alex Willi. Midway through the period, junior Destrey Zarfos dished one to freshman Bailey Knight for the Raiders' second goal. With seconds remaining in the period, senior Erin Anderson netted a shorthanded goal to give the home Raiders an impressive 3-0 lead at the second intermission.

Hudson senior Emily Stankevitz notched an unassisted goal two minutes into the third period to hand the Fusion one of its largest deficits of the season at 4-0, but the league leaders weren't rolling over just yet. St. Croix Valley freshman Heather Shew responded with a goal from a Tory Klingler assist, and junior Alice Cranston sent one past Hudson senior goalie Alise Riedel to pull to within two goals, but the Raiders held on for the final seven minutes to earn the upset victory.

Hudson's win over the Fusion gave the Raiders a final conference record of 6-1-1, just a half-game behind St. Croix Valley's 7-1-0 mark.

Honorable Mention:

Taylor Atkinson, Franklin (Girls Basketball): The Franklin junior was instrumental in the Sabers' pair of Southeastern Conference victories this last week. Atkinson scored 34 points in a double-OT upset over #13 Racine Case Monday, then responded with a 22-point outburst in a blowout victory over Oak Creek. With the wins, Franklin moved back into third place in the SEC, three games behind league-leading Muskego.

Jordan Mach, Antigo (Boys Basketball): Currently the second-leading scorer in the state, Antigo senior Jordan Mach did not disappoint Friday night in a battle of Great Northern Conference heavyweights. Mach scored 38 of his team's 58 points in a two-point squeaker over Merrill, as the Red Robins moved a game and a half above their rival Bluejays.

Catholic Memorial (Boys Hockey): The Crusaders handed an unbeaten and #2 ranked Stoughton squad its first loss of the 09-10 season with a 5-3 decision Tuesday night. Five different CMH players recorded goals in the win, while goalie David Chapin recorded 12 saves from 15 Viking shots. The Crusaders are in a virtual tie for second place in the Classic Eight Conference with Arrowhead, which managed a 3-3 tie with Catholic Memorial Friday.
