The Auburndale Apaches girls basketball team keyed in defensively and scored a pair of huge home victories over Marawood South opponents to earn the Valentine's Day Splash of the Week. The Apaches held two of the top three scoring teams well below their averages to also move to within two games of first place in the league standings.

Tuesday against Edgar, which had been averaging exactly 50 points per game, Auburndale held the Wildcats to just 21 points through three quarters and held on for a 37-32 win. On Friday, despite trailing 12-11 at the half, the Apaches continued to shut down high-powered Assumption and outscored the Royals 26-11 in the second half. Auburndale held league-leading Assumption 27 points below their average and allowed only four Royals to score six field goals in a 37-23 win.

With the likes of Edgar and defending State champion Amherst in the Wausau West regional, the Apaches also made a big statement toward securing the regional's top seed. Despite early season four-game losing streak to Edgar, Assumption, Phillips and Newman, Auburndale has reeled off five straight wins.

Honorable Mention:

Evan Richard, Cuba City (Boys Basketball): The Cuba City senior needed all of his 33 points to squeak past an energized Fennimore squad Friday as the Cubans moved one game away from locking up a SWAL title. The UW-Milwaukee recruit upped his season average to 22.9 points per game thanks to the game-high scoring output and was instrumental in the second half, scoring 25 in the third and fourth quarters to hold off a late Golden Eagle charge.

Appleton United (Girls Hockey): Appleton United scored three important victories last week as it gears up for what it hopes to be a deep playoff run. Tuesday Appleton handed the Bay Area Ice Bears their fourth loss of the season by a score of 2-1, then beat Kettle Moraine by the same score Friday and Northern Edge 5-2 on Saturday. Appleton, who logged a #3 seed with a 12-8-3 record, will host the South Central Freeze to open Regional play Friday afternoon.

Beloit Memorial (Boys Basketball): Madison Memorial may have already lost a pair of Big Eight games, but not by as much as they did Friday against Beloit Memorial. The road-warrior Knights used a 20-10 second quarter run to pull away from the host Spartans and cruised to a huge 84-71 league win. Beloit, who had four players in double figures led by K.J. Evans' 25, finds itself in a three-way tie for third place league standings at 10-5.
