Finally, a Track & Field state record has fallen in 2010.

At the Monona Grove Invitational last Saturday, MG senior thrower Angela Boushea launched the shot put 47'8" to set a new all-time mark in that event, earning this week's Splash of the Week.

All season, Boushea had been about a foot behind Julie Beck's long-time mark of 47'5.5" set at Tomah's sectional meet in 1990. Yet that record is tops no longer, as the defending Division 1 state champion set a new mark at her final home meet of her high school throwing career.

"I'm glad I (broke the record) at home because I've been practicing here for the last four years," Boushea told the Wisconsin State Journal. "It's awesome. Lots of blood, sweat and tears went into this field."

Boushea, who will be throwing in the Cardinal and White at the University of Wisconsin next spring, also ranks second in this year's Discus efforts after a throw of 143'3" Saturday.

"Both events include having great foot work, technique, power, explosion and focus," Boushea said in an interview for the current edition of WSN Illustrated, which should be hitting most schools this week.

Next on the checklist for Boushea is the State Meet record of 46'3.5" set by Appleton East's Heidi Baerenwald in 2008-- a mark well within reach.

Honorable Mention

Devon Furtak, Butternut: The senior hurler has been nearly flawless this season, leading the Midgets to a 12-1 start and a No. 4 ranking in Division 4. Last weekend, Furtak earned three victories in the Webster/Siren Invitational, improving her overall record to 10-1. She gave up no runs, three hits and struck out eight in four innings of work to open the tourney against Braham, Minn., in a 12-2 victory. Against Amery, Furtak struck out 4 and gave up 3 walks, four hits and an earned run in an 8-2 win over the Warriors, then threw a three-hit, seven strike-out complete game in a 10-0 win over Somerset. Butternut, who's only season loss was to Hurley, is also hitting .404 as a team with a pitcher's ERA of 0.59. Furtak alone hits .439 and boasts one of the state's best 0.34 ERA.

Lechein Neblett, Madison Memorial: Neblett torched the hurldles competition at Monona Grove Invitational, setting two season records in the process. In the 110-meter Highs, the senior took 22-hundredths of a second off his time and set a time of 14.32 to overtake Matt Widule's previous season mark. In the 300 Intermediates, Neblett improved a second and a half to overtake Dexter Schleis' previous season high by posting a time of 38.29 seconds. Those two marks also cracked the top-20 all-time honor roll for Neblett, who assumes 17th place in the 110 hurdles and 18th place in the 300 race.

La Crosse Aquinas Baseball: In one of the longest games recorded this season, Aquinas outlasted Prairie du Chien in a 15-inning marathon Saturday to pick up a solid non-conference 4-1 victory. Ironically, those 15 innings came in the first game of what was a scheduled double header! In a shortened game two, the Blugolds won 8-1 in five innings, earning the sweep over the No. 2 team in Division 2 and handing the Blackhawks just their second and third losses of the season.
