We said it in last week's Honorable Mention, and we'll say it again-- the Edgar Girls Track & Field Squad was dominant this Spring. The Wildcats not only won the Division 3 State title this weekend at UW-La Crosse, they did so in impressive fashion by scoring an all-time State meet best 114 team points, earning this week's Splash of the Week.

Youth abounded this year's Wildcats roster, as six of the nine podium-earning individual efforts came from underclassmen. Sophomore Faryn Wirkus won the Pole Vault, breaking the D3 State meet record with an 11-6 mark. Classmate Tessa Thurs finished second in the 300 Hurdles and fourth in the 100m hurdles, while fellow sophomore Jena Heidmann came in second behind junior teammate Emily Dittman in the 100m dash and also earned a fourth place finish in the long jump.

Edgar also swept the 400, 800 and 1600 relays with a pair of freshmen as anchors. Kira Dittman, who also finished 4th in the 200m dash, anchored the winning 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams. Classmate Elizabeth Pospyhalla, who anchored the champion 4x400 squad, also won the 800m run and finished third in the 400m dash. Fellow freshman Holly Denfeld also finished sixth in the Triple Jump.

While the 'Cats may be young, a pair of seniors earned three fourth place finishes as well. Dana Lemanski vaulted 10-0 in the Pole Vault, while Hannah Pospyhalla picked up a pair of fourth place finishes in the 200m and 400m dashes.

Edgar, who outscored second-place Newman 114-42 at the State meet, is the first team to ever score more than 100 points in the State finals. The 72-point margin of victory also marks a State meet record, as the Wildcats' dominating postseason appropriately culminated in a golden trophy.

Honorable Mention

Jessica Maroszek, Seymour: Maroszek earned double-gold in the weights competitions at the Division 1 State track meet this weekend, breaking an all-time state record in the process. As the heavy favorite in the Discus, the senior did not disappoint by launching it 157-4 to win the event by almost nine feet. In the Shot Put, Maroszek out-threw Monona Grove's Angela Boushea by two feet, with a Wisconsin state girls record 49-4.25 to secure her second gold of the meet.

River Falls Baseball: The old sports moniker "It's tough to beat a team three times in one season" rung true for the River Falls baseball team, as it upset top-seeded and #2-ranked Eau Claire North 3-2 in Friday's Division 1 regional final matchup. Alex Call got the nod for the Wildcats, as the freshman pitched a no-earned run, four-hit, five-strikeout game against the Huskies who qualified for the State semifinals last season. Jack Herum pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up a leadoff walk then sitting down the next six batters to push River Falls through onto sectionals. The Wildcats will face Stevens Point Tuesday afternoon.

Kenosha Tremper Softball: What the River Falls boys did to Eau Claire North, the Kenosha Tremper girls did to Kenosha Bradford. The Trojans, after suffering 10-0 and 1-0 losses to Southeastern Conference champion and crosstown rival Bradford in mid-May, stunned the top-seeded and #3-ranked Red Devils 7-4 in the Division 1 regional final Thursday. Tremper, the #9-seed in the Badger Sectional, will travel to #4-seed Westosha Central Tuesday afternoon in the sectional semifinal.
