In arguably the biggest upset of the WIAA Division 1 Boys Soccer regional rounds, Madison East knocked off Big Eight champion, No. 7-ranked and capital city east side rival La Follette Thursday in a D1 Regional final to earn a berth in the Sectional semifinals and this week's Splash of the Week.

Senegal native and East senior Babacar Kone redirected waist-high ball, touched loose off a throw-in, to score the game's lone goal nearly 30 minutes into the first half. The Purgolders seemed to effectively control the tempo in the first half, but La Follette cranked up the offensive pressure in the second half as East goal-keeper Garrett Farin had 11 saves in the game. But Farin gave up zero goals, which handed the Lancers just their second loss of the season.

"They have a lot of weapons and we just had to defend as a team," Farin told the Wisconsin State Journal. "I feel the best I've ever felt (after a game). I thought beating Arrowhead in the beginning of the season was it, but this is even better."

Madison East also knocked off Watertown in the Purgolders' regional opener by a similar 1-0 final.

East, now 12-7-2 on the year, moves on to play Kettle Moraine in the sectional semifinal Thursday. The Lasers are the No. 2 seed in its host sectional and ranked No. 9 in the latest WSCA poll.

Honorable Mention

Franklin Football:
The Sabers started upset week in motion, knocking off Division1 top-ranked Kenosha Bradford 40-35 on the road Thursday evening. Quarterback Lance Baretz had another exceptional game, throwing for 288 yards and five touchdowns on 20-for-31 passing. Baretz also added a rushing touchdown on 17 carries and 81 yards, while Brady Oates caught five Baretz tosses for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Racine St. Catherine's & Grantsburg Girls Volleyball:
The two top-ranked Division 3 teams completed respective regular seasons undefeated Saturday; St. Cat's at the MCC South Tourney and Grantsburg at the Cameron Invite. The Angels, now 36-0, knocked off Dominican, Kenosha Christian Life, Catholic Central and Shoreland Lutheran--all sweeps-- to add the conference tournament title alongside its already clinched regular season MCC South title. Far across the state, Grantsburg was just as dominant at its non-conference tournament in Cameron, sweeping the host Comets, Fall Creek, Bloomer, Barron and Colfax to improve to an even 30-0 on the year. Both the Angels and Pirates earned respective top-seeds in their regionals, which kicks off this Tuesday.

Isaac Neumann, Somerset: The Spartan senior running back ran roughshod over formerly unbeaten and heated Middle Border Conference rival Baldwin-Woodville Friday, amassing 270 ground yards and a pair of touchdowns on 35 carries. Somerset withstood a furious fourth-quarter comeback from the Blackhawks and got a huge 68-yard TD run from Neumann in that final session to slow the B-W momentum. With the 33-31 victory, the Spartans pulled back into the conference race, in a three-way tie atop the MBC at 5-1.

James Weber, Hartford: The junior scored four goals in the first half and another pair in the second half in a 6-1 opening round regional victory over conference rival Beaver Dam Tuesday. In last Thursday's second round against Oshkosh West, Weber followed up with four goals in a 5-1 win over the Wildcats, sending the Orioles into the sectional semifinals Thursday.

Tomahawk Girls Volleyball: The Hatchets were hungry for revenge after an early-season upset loss to Mosinee in Great Northern Conference play. Saturday, they exacted their revenge in a clean sweep of the Indians at the GNC Tourney hosted by Northland Pines. Tomahawk also beat Medford and Antigo on the day to clinch its first conference title--which it will share with Mosinee--since 2006.
