Franklin - A battle of two outstanding teams with conflicting, yet equally productive styles of play took place Thursday night, and the game captured the attention of fans throughout the state. After falling behind early, Franklin scored 27 second quarter points and then held on late to take a 40-35 victory over Division 1's top-ranked Kenosha Bradford in a game pitting undefeated Southeast Conference teams. Lance Baretz was once again outstanding, passing for five touchdowns and running for the Sabers' other score on his way to 369 total yards. The defense forced five turnovers and two more turnovers on downs, and sealed it on an interception with Bradford driving inside of one minute left in the game.

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau - G-E-T entered Friday night's showdown with Arcadia knowing that they needed a win not only to clinch a playoff berth, but also force a three-way tie atop the Coulee Conference standings. Fresh off a 46-23 loss to Black River Falls, the Red Hawks responded by knocking off Arcadia 21-20. With the ground game struggling, G-E-T turned to the air, where quarterback Derek Smidt completed 8 of 13 passes for 115 yards and 3 touchdowns. After coming back from an early 13-0 deficit, the Red Hawks pulled to within 20-19 in the third quarter on a touchdown from Smidt to Sam Glomstad-Foster. After having their previous extra point attempt blocked, head coach Jon Steffenhagen went for two and converted on a Seth Stegemeyer run. The 21-20 lead held up the rest of the way and there is now a three-way tie at the top of the Coulee.

Omro - The move from the Eastern Valley Conference, where they were much smaller than their league opponents, to the Wisconsin Flyway has paid immediate dividends for the Omro football team. A thrilling 27-24 win over undefeated, top-ranked, and defending state champion St. Mary's Springs clinched at least a share of the Flyway title for the Foxes, ending a 39-year conference title drought. Quarterback Ryan Winske rushed for three touchdowns for Omro, who face one-win Lomira in Week 9 with a chance to clinch the outright conference title.

Rice Lake - Despite being less than half the size of the largest school in the Big Rives Conference, and playing teams from at least one if not two divisions higher, the Rice Lake Warriors have a strong football history. After a few rough years, Rice Lake is back at the top again, and after a convincing 34-14 Week 8 win over Chippewa Falls, find themselves tied for the conference lead with Menomonie and ChiHi. Quarterback Cody Novinska scored a pair of first half touchdowns and Chris Esters added two more in the third quarter (one a kick return the other a 1-yard run) as Rice Lake pulled away. They face River Falls in Week 9 with a chance to clinch a share of the Big Rivers crown.

Westosha Central - Westosha Central had an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2007, but would have to taken on undefeated Delavan-Darien to do so. No problem for the Falcons, who rallied from an early 12-0 deficit and then scored on an Austin Damaschke to Jared Zirbel touchdown pass with 1:04 left in the game to break a 20-20 tie. Their defense held up and the Falcons won 27-20 to guarantee themselves a postseason opportunity.
