With a 4-3 North Shore Conference record and at 5-4 overall, Germantown may have been a humble 4-seed in the WIAA Division 1 football playoff bracket. Yet after one of the biggest upsets of the playoffs this season, the Warhawks now find themselves in a Level 3 playoff game just two games from Camp Randall, earning this week's Splash of the Week.

After finally putting down Sheboygan South with a trio of second half touchdowns to kick off its post season, Germantown found itself in Level 2 facing an all-too-familiar Homestead squad. The undefeated North Shore Conference champion Highlanders hadn't lost to a conference opponent since 2002 and had been the top-ranked squad in the latest WSN coaches' poll. All that changed Saturday as the Warhawks opened with a 10-point first quarter and hung on for the 17-10 win.

Alex Gasper kicked the scoring off with a 27-yard field goal for the Warhawks, then Dylan Krivoshein connected with receiver Jake Richmond right before the first quarter ended to take a 10-0 lead. Homestead's Zach Enea pulled the Highlanders within three at the half with a 16-yard run, but the Highlanders had trouble moving the ball in the second half. Alec Richmond added a one-yard TD run to lead off the second half for G-town and its staunch defense gave up only a third-quarter field goal the rest of the way.

Just one week earlier on the final game of the regular season, Germantown's furious fourth-quarter comeback was cut short on a failed two-point conversion run, preserving Homestead's streak one game longer.  Yet the 'Hawks got their revenge and the timing couldn't have been better, as long time head coach Phil Datka announced his retirement at the end of this season.

The schedule doesn't get any easier for Germantown as it will host Marquette in Level 3 Saturday.

Honorable Mention

Molly Siedel, University Lake School: With a WIAA State Meet record time of 13:44.4, University Lake School junior Molly Seidel won her third straight Division 3 state cross country championship Saturday. Siedel is just the fourth runner to win three straight titles, and this year she finished 1:06.34 ahead of second place Sarah McMahon from Colfax.

Kortney Morrin, Grantsburg: Morrin led the top-ranked Pirates past No. 4 Regis in a WIAA Division 3 sectional final sweep Saturday, racking up 22 kills, 10 digs and four aces against the Ramblers. In Thursday's 3-1 semifinal victory against post-season rival and No. 7 Washburn, Morrin also tallied 27 kills, 12 digs and 4.5 blocks. Grantsburg moves on to play familiar state foe Wisconsin Heights in a state semifinal Friday morning.

Kenosha St. Joseph Boys Cross Country: Despite not having a single runner in the top 10 indivuduals, the Lancers blew past the competition at the Division 3 state cross country race Saturday, winning the team title by nearly 40 points over second place Cedar Grove-Belgium. Pack-style running was the key to St. Joe's victory, as the its five scoring runners finished just over 41 seconds apart.

Auburndale Girls Volleyball: We said they might have been the state's most dangerous 3-seed entering the state volleyball playoffs, and the Apaches proved us right by knocking off three state-ranked teams en route to their second consecutive Division 3 sectional title Saturday. Auburndale will tackle undefeated Racine St. Catherine's Friday in a state semifinal.

Marquette, Catholic Memorial & The Prairie School Boys Soccer: The three Milwaukee area schools all secured state titles at the newly renovated Time Warner Cable Stadium at Uihlein Park Saturday in Milwaukee. Division 1 champ Marquette won its seventh title, Division 2 champion Catholic Memorial won its first and Division 3 champ The Prairie School won its third state championship since joining the WIAA in 2000.
