Playing under the lights at Camp Randall in the Division 1 championship football game Friday evening was Joe Schobert's time to shine, as the Waukesha West running back had a record-breaking night en route to a team trophy and this week's Splash of the Week honors.

Schobert, a 6-2, 190-pound junior, rushed for 296 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries in the season and state tournament finale. That final yardage total broke former Racine Park and now University of Wisconsin running back John Clay's mark of 259 yards set in the 2005 Division 1 championship game.

Waukesha West, playing in its second ever state championship game and its first in Division 1, racked up 436 total yards and 369 on the ground to take out upset-minded Stevens Point 45-26 in the D1 title game. Schobert scored on the Wolverines' first play from scrimmage on a 25-yard scamper after a first-possession SPASH fumble. He added another 15-yard run midway through the second quarter, then added a receiving touchdown in the final seconds on a pass from Brandon Berghoefer to give the Wolverines a commanding 35-12 halftime lead.

Shobert's outing aside, the Waukesha West team also set several state records in the championship game:
-- Most points scored, 45 - D.C. Everest, 42 (2003)
-- Most points both teams, 71 - D.C. Everest vs. Arrowhead, 49 (2003)
-- Most points single quarter, 21 - ties Arrowhead (2007), Homestead (2006), D.C. Everest (2003), Racine Park (1989)
-- Most total yards, 436 - D.C. Everest, 425 (1983)

Honorable Mention

Cody Rosemeyer & Austin Zach, Gilman: In the opening game of the 2010 state football championship slate, the Gilman rushing tandem put on quite a show in what quickly became a rout for the rural northwestern Wisconsin squad. Rosemeyer rushed for a game-high 218 yards and a Division 7-record four touchdowns while teammate Zach added 181 and a TD himself as Gilman stomped Catholic Central 42-13 to win the Division 7 title-- the Pirates' third ever state championship.

Waunakee, West De Pere, Kewaunee, Brillion & Edgar Football: All five squads capped off undefeated seasons with respective state crowns Thursday and Friday. Waunakee took out Cedarburg 48-7 in Division 2, West De Pere shutout Catholic Memorial 35-0 in Division 3, Kewaunee held off Brodhead/Juda 41-21 in D4, Brillion beat Colby 31-10 in Division 5, while Edgar survived St. Mary's Springs 6-3 in a defensive Division 6 battle. It was the third time in the past decade that five teams finished the season with perfect season records.
