BOARD GIVES APPROVAL TO CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT PLAN; STUDENT TICKET PLAN

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control reviewed a number of topics relating to Association matters and approved first consideration of a conference realignment proposal involving Horicon High School, as well as a student ticket proposal for the three-game session of the basketball tournaments at its December meeting today.

The Board gave initial support of a conference realignment plan that removes Horicon from the Wisconsin Flyway Conference and places the school in the Trailways Conference for all sports beginning in the fall of 2012. The move would make the Wisconsin Flyway an eight-team league and the Trailways a 20-team conference. A complete list of the schools affected is provided below.

WIAA membership rules require a 40-day window for schools involved in realignment plans to appeal the first consideration of the Board before it takes final action. Thus, schools have until Jan. 12, 2011, to file for an appeal of the Board’s initial vote. The Board is scheduled to take second and final action on the realignment plan at its Jan. 26 meeting.

The Board also approved a reduced student ticket price for the session featuring the Divisions 3, 4 and 5 championship finals on Saturday of the State Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments in March. The three-game session ticket will be $12 for adults and $8 for students.

Among the topics reviewed and discussed at the meeting included a review of the recently completed fall Tournament Series, a preliminary draft of a number of Constitutional amendments that may be advanced to the membership for a vote at the Annual Meeting in April and a review of the 2011-12 meeting schedule.

The membership of the WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 506 senior high schools and 90 junior high/middle level schools in its membership. It will sponsor 25 championship tournament series in 2010-11. For more information, please contact the WIAA office at (715) 344-8580.
