In a huge early-season Big Eight clash between league favorites, Madison Memorial needed the full efforts of junior forward Junior Lomomba for the Spartans to overtake Sun Prairie 66-65 Saurday. Behind 21 points, Lomomba also earned this week's Splash of the Week.

Memorial, ranked No. 1 in the first WSN Coaches Poll last week, had several of its regular starting crew sidelined by injuries. Lomomba was not, however, and with fewer than 10 seconds left on the clock, sunk the game-winning jumper to move the Spartans to 3-0 on the season.

Mark Miller recounts: After Sun Prairie's Chris Hawkins missed two free throws witht he Cardinals clinging to a 65-64 lead with under 20 seconds left, Memorial head coach Steve Collins called a timeout to diagram the last play. Everybody in the packed gymnasium knew the ball would wind up with Lomomba.

"The game is pretty simple," Collins told Miller. "Get the ball to Junior. I thought Sun Prairie might double team him so I had my shooters ready just in case.

"The experience Junior had with the Canadian National Team last summer was huge for him. He came back a different person. In some ways, I had forgotten how young he was in the past two years. Now, he has really matured."

That maturation was evident in the Spartans' victory over a very strong Sun Prairie squad, as Lomomba finished with a game-high 21 points. Earlier in the week, he tallied 24 and 25 points in respective wins over West Allis Central and Verona, both also game-highs.

Lomomba and Memorial will next travel to Janesville Craig Friday, then to Wisconsin Lutheran College Saturday to face Milwaukee King at the Eastbay/Converse Classic.
