Week 3 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll

Week 2 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll
Week 1 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll

The Week 3 WSN/WBCA Boys Basketball Coaches Poll has been released, and the big news is a new #1 team in Division 1. Madison Memorial had been #1 the first two weeks of the season, but Saturday at the Eastbay/Converse Classic the Spartans went down at the hands of #2 Milwaukee King, allowing the Generals to move into the top spot. It is still early and things will change tremendously over the course of the year, but this gives a bit of a guide as to some of the programs to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Remember, in addition to the Coaches Poll you can also check out Team Stats, winning percentage and RPI by clicking here.

Division 1

As previously mentioned, Division 1 has a new #1 team as former top-ranked Madison Memorial went down 57-35 in convincing fashion to #2 Milwaukee King on Saturday. The Generals only had one double-figure scorer, junior Dominique Broom with 11 points, but displayed their excellent depth with a total of nine players getting their name in the scoring column. The scary thing about this team is that they are playing without 6-7 forward Cinmeon Bowers, who transferred to King from Nicolet via a prep school and will be eligible after the holidays. While King moves up to #1, Memorial slips to #3 in the rankings. Appleton East, a state tournament team last year, moves in to the #2 spot with Milwaukee Marquette and Germantown also holding top five positions. Last year's Division 1 champion Arrowhead makes its debut in the polls at #9, while Green Bay East enters the rankings at #14. Waukesha West and Bay Port slipped out of the rankings after losing last week (West lost to Arrowhead).

Division 2

While Onalaska continues to maintain the top spot in the Division 2 rankings, there has been a bit of shuffling in the rest of the top five. Seymour, with wins over a D1-ranked Bay Port squad as well as Luxemburg-Casco in the past week, moves from #3 to #2. Waunakee goes from #4 to #3 and Monroe gets jostled from #2 to #4. Former #5 Nicolet went down to Kenosha Bradford last week and slips to #10 this week. Other movement saw Wauwatosa East, Waterford, Oregon, and Beaver Dam drop out of the top fifteen to be replaced by McFarland, Elkhorn, Two Rivers, and Union Grove.

Division 3

Racine St. Cat's remains the team to beat in Division 3 coming off a state title last year, but the gap in the voters eyes is narrowing between the Angels and the rest of the field. East Troy has looked very good in the early going, and vaults from #4 to #2 this week. Roncalli was #2 last week, but despite picking up a pair of sizable wins slides to #6 as there isn't much separating the top seven teams. Dominican, Aquinas, and Saint John's Northwest Military Academy round out the top five, with Brillion coming in at #7 just behind Roncalli. Prairie du Chien and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau are closing fast as well with some solid wins under their belts already. Winneconne played three games since the last rankings (and six overall on the year) and won them all, allowing the Wolves to make a season debut in the polls at #11. The Wolves are one of four teams unbeaten in Eastern Valley Conference play so far (Freedom, Little Chute, and Fox Valley Lutheran are the others), with the league race shaping up to be one of the best in the state. All three of the other EVC unbeatens are receiving votes in this week's poll but didn't quite crack the top fifteen.

Division 4

Blair-Taylor has only been able to get in two games so far this year, but the Wildcats continue to hold a sizable lead in the Division 4 Coaches Poll. Racine Lutheran is a solid #2 still. Laconia, Amherst, and Regis round out the rest of the top five. Darlington was ranked #6 last week, but took a 52-42 loss to Division 2 top-five team Monroe on Monday night. The coaches recognized a tough game for the Redbirds, who only slid one spot to #7. SWAL rival Cuba City moved just ahead of them to #6. There was significant turnover at the bottom of the rankings, as Wisconsin Heights, Wild Rose, Oshkosh Lourdes, and Ozaukee all slipped out of the poll this week. Auburndale, Grantsburg, Webster, and Colby are all undefeated and move into the top fifteen for the first time this season.

Division 5

Randolph remains the only unanimous #1 team amongst any of the divisions, despite being the only top team with a loss at this point. Sheboygan Lutheran is a near consensus #2 pick behind a tremendous start of the season by Wisconsin recruit Sam Dekker and company. Benton was ranked #3 last week, but lost a tough game to Division 3 Platteville. The Zephyrs only drop to #4 this week, with Suring taking their former #3 position. Green Bay NEW Lutheran rounds out the top five, with their only loss this year to Sheboygan Lutheran. Catholic Central was ranked 7th last week, but went down twice since the last poll, albeit to a pair of much larger schools. While the Hilltoppers are slipped out of the rankings this week, expect them to be a top D5 contender by season's end, although their record may not look the greatest competing in the extremely tough Midwest Classic-South Conference.
