The Central Wisconsin Storm girls hockey team has been almost untouchable this season as it won a trio of games to be crowned champions of the Rochester holiday tournament last week, also earning this week's Splash of the Week.

The Storm kicked off the tournament run with an easy opening-round 3-0 victory over International Falls, Minn. via goals from Jordan Mroczenski, Tiffany Hladovak and Morgan Pearson. The next two rounds weren't so simple, as Central Wisconsin scored just one single goal in each game. Yet with all-everything goal-tender Hillary Drake in-net, it was all the Storm needed as it knocked off Rochester Mayo, Minn. and Visitation/SPA United, Minn. by scores of 1-0.

Drake has given up just two goals in 170 shot attempts for a state-best .988 save percentage. Yet with all the hype Drake gets on her team, and respectfully so, she's been getting plenty of support from her fellow cast members who came through in the clutch this past week. As mentioned three players found the back of the net in the opener, while Hladovak and Alex Guenther scored the game winners against Mayo and V/SPA respectively.

The Storm return to in-state action this week with a long string of Great Northern matchups, starting with Northland Pines Monday.

Honorable Mention

Pius XI Girls Basketball:
The Lady Popes kept their perfect season record intact by surging to the Rathke Memorial Tournament in Franklin last week. Pius defeated Kenosha Bradford, top-ranked Nicolet and host Franklin as four different players (Teri Bender, Alyson Matkovich, Katie Golomski and Aaliyah Ramirez) led the team in scoring in those three tournament games.

Alex Richard, River Valley: The senior forward made quite a splash in a trio of games last week , averaging nearly 24 points per game. In a Madison Edgewood Invite loss to Beaver Dam at the UW Fieldhouse, Richard scored an even 20 points, then went for 24 in a 66-52 win over Brodhead and 27 in a 68-66 upset over top-ranked and previously undefeated Cuba City at the Cuba City Classic.

Kettle Moraine Glacier Girls Hockey: The Glacier won the White division of the Schwan's Cup girls hockey tournament last week in St. Paul, defeating a pair of Wisconsin-based teams in the process. In the first round, Kettle Moraine knocked off Marshfield 4-2 before beating a very tough Onalaska squad 4-3 in the semis. In an exciting final, Kettle Moraine used a shootout to knock off Richfield, Minn. 3-2 to take the division cup.

Regis Boys Basketball:
The Ramblers took down a pair of fellow perennial powerhouses at the WBY Classic last week as well, knocking off Dominican 57-54 and defending D2 state champion Catholic Memorial 62-58. Senior guard and Samford-commit Connor Miller had 19 points in both contests, with senior center Steven Hofacker also adding 19 in the victory over CMH. Regis is now 8-1 on the season, its only loss to Aquinas in early December.

Algoma Girls Basketball: The Wolves made it two-for-two in their matchups against 2010 state runners-up at the Weyauwega-Fremont holiday tournament last week, following up a 51-45 upset over Division 1 runner-up De Pere on Dec. 20 with a 66-29 trouncing of Winneconne on Wednesday evening. Algoma then beat host Weyauwega-Fremont in the title game to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Joe Engelhart, WSFLG Blizzard: The junior forward scored a hat-trick at the Rice Lake holiday tournament last week in a 6-1 victory over Madison Memorial, then added the game winning power-play goal in a surprising 2-1 upset win in the semifinals over Stoughton. Engelhart is the current points leader for the Blizzard (made of schools Webster, Siren, Frederic, Luck and Grantsburg), which has raced out to a 9-1-1 start to the season.
