Week 6 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll

Week 4 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll
Week 3 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll
Week 2 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll
Week 1 WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll

Note:  Due to the Holiday break, there was no Week 5 poll.

There was plenty of action over the holiday break, as nearly every team had at least one game in the week following Christmas, with many teams taking part in multi-game tournaments. Quite a few games featured ranked teams in events like the Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout, the Madison Edgewood Invitational, and Shawano Classic. With so many games played since the last poll, and so many teams proving they belonged in the rankings (or perhaps didn't belong), there was significant movement in every division. Remember, in addition to the Coaches Poll you can also check out Team Stats, winning percentage and RPI by clicking here.

Division 1

Milwaukee King picked up a pair of victories at the New Berlin Classic, although they were by a combined five points, and remains the top team in Division 1. Appleton East occupies the #2 position once again after a solid win over a previously undefeated Seymour squad at the Shawano Classic. Madison Memorial slides into the #3 spot vacated when Germantown lost to De Pere. The Redbirds from De Pere are #4 and Germantown #5 this week. Marshfield is still undefeated and moves up to #6, while fellow Wisconsin Valley Conference squad Wisconsin Rapids shoots into the rankings at #9 thanks to a 9-0 start. Milwaukee Hamilton may have three losses on the year, but all have been to tough out of state opponents. They did pick up a dominating win over Bowman Academy (IN), a state titlist in Indiana last year featuring multiple Division 1 college players, at the WBY Shootout and have moved up to the #7 position. Pulaski, 8-0 so far but relatively untested against higher level competition (their opponents' winning percentage is just .350), moves into this week's rankings at #15 but faces a stiff test tonight in traveling to Bay Port.

Division 2

Top-ranked Onalaska picked up solid wins over Beaver Dam and Oshkosh North at the WBY Shootout and were awarded with the top spot once again. Seymour's loss to Appleton East dropped the Thunder from #2 to #6, allowing Monroe to move up to #2. Waunakee, New Richmond, and Wisconsin Lutheran round out the top five. Madison Edgewood, Milwaukee Madison, Union Grove, and Oregon are all new teams in this week's rankings. While Edgewood took a tough double overtime loss to Monroe just before break, they went 3-0 the week after Christmas with wins over Elkhorn, Port Washington, and Middleton. Oregon found its stride with a 68-59 non-conference win over previously ranked McFarland.

Division 3

Unbeaten Racine St. Catherine's holds a commanding lead in the Division 3 poll, although there is quite a bit of balance in the top ten. Aquinas picked up wins over Milwaukee Northwest and Prairie du Chien at its own holiday tournament and slide into the #2 position. Roncalli was one of the few idle teams over the Christmas break, but move to #3. The Jets have a huge Olympian Conference battle with unbeaten and sixth-ranked Brillion on Thursday. Saint John's Northwest Military Academy and East Troy round out the top five. Dominican is an interesting team, with three losses on the year and two since the last rankings came out (to Whitefish Bay and Regis), but got a nice win over Pius XI and have the talent to a state tournament team in Division 3. The coaches would seem to agree, as the Knights are the highest-ranked three-loss team in any division at #7 (Milwaukee Hamilton also has three losses as the #7 team in D1). Mauston has started out 8-0 and makes its debut at #13 this week.

Division 4

Like Racine St. Cat's, the team they lost to in last year's Division 3 state tournament, Blair-Taylor is a prohibitive #1 in Division 4. The Wildcats played just one game over break, a 24-point win over Osseo-Fairchild, and are on a roll early in the year. Racine Lutheran remains the #2 team. Former #3 Amherst went down to Omro shortly before break and slipped to #6 this week. Unbeatens Marathon and Oostburg along with Regis round out the top five. Regis scored quality wins over Spring Valley, Dominican, and Catholic Memorial since the last rankings were out. Unbeaten Cameron makes its debut this week after compiling a 6-0 record so far. The Cougars enter the poll at #11.

Division 5

Despite suffering a second loss, this one to 11th-ranked D1 team Beloit, Randolph remains the top team in Division 5. Benton remains #2 while Sheboygan Lutheran stays at #3 despite suffering its first loss of the year in an overtime thriller to Hope School, despite 52 points from junior UW recruit Sam Dekker. Suring and Prentice round out the top five. #7 Bayfield, #9 Gilmanton, and #13 Eau Claire Immanuel Lutheran are the only remaining unbeaten teams in Division 5.
