Reedsburg senior Chad Mazur has some pretty athletic bones in his body as the football, basketball and baseball star has wowed Beaver fans in his four years there. Saturday evening he scored a new school record 51 points in a win over Badger North Conference rival Portage to also earn this week's Splash of the Week.

Mazur, who topped former UW wing Clayton Hansen's 47-point game set in the 2000-01 season, also eclipsed the 1,000-point career mark in the Beavers' 70-58 victory over the Warriors. Averaging 27.5 points through the first 10 games, Mazur currently ranks fourth on the state scoring list this season.

In what was a very close game throughout, Mazur played essentially the entire game en route to breaking the school record. The senior had previously recorded a season-high of 35 points against Adams-Friendship on December 29, but sat much of the fourth quarter as the Beavers were in control.

“He has taken his game to yet another level in basketball," Reedsburg head coach Brian Bestor said in Mark Miller's latest edition of his Hoops Notebook column. "He’s become more complete in his ability to get into the lane. He’s always been able to shoot it, but he has also improved a great deal as a ball handler. He’s also an outstanding leader."

The 51 points scored also ranks second on this season's single-game point totals behind Sam Dekker's 52-point outburst over the holiday break.

Honorable Mention

Leah Karna, Northwestern: Mazur wasn't the only high-scoring show last week as Northwestern senior forward Leah Karna scored 58 points in two Heart O'North games last week. Karna scored 35 in a 71-50 Tuesday victory over Cumberland, becoming the ninth player in the state to cross the 35-point single-game threshold this season, then tallied a game-high 23 points in a 50-37 loss to Bloomer Thursday.

University School of Milwaukee Boys Hockey: The Wildcats may be just barely .500 on the season, but don't count out the defending state champions as they knocked off a pair of ranked opponents last weekend. Eight different players picked up at least one point in the wins, which included a 3-1 victory over No. 6 Catholic Memorial/Pius and a 2-1 win over No. 5 Notre Dame.

Marathon Boys Basketball: Behind a game-high 26 points from Cody Hanke, Marathon took control of the Marawood South race with a 51-38 victory over No. 12 Auburndale Friday night. The Red Radiers, ranked No. 3 in last week's WSN/WBCA Coaches Poll, moved to 11-0 overall and 6-0 in league play with the victory.

Xavier Girls Basketball: In what was a very heated battle between two excellent squads, the Hawks broke a third-quarter tie to pull out a 55-50 victory over Division 3's No. 3 Freedom Friday night to take over sole possession of the Eastern Valley Conference. Led by Michaela Machurick's 11 points, Xavier had five players score at least eight points, providing enough balance to knock off the Irish for the first time in the last seven tries.
