Baseball coaches clinic on deck Saturday at River Valley

Pitchers and catchers are reporting to spring training at the Major League level and prep teams are in the midst of voluntary winter workouts.

With baseball fever in the air, Madison College baseball coach Mike Davenport will headline a coaches clinic at River Valley High School on Saturday, Feb. 26.

The clinic for area coaches will take place from 9 to noon at the high school gym, according to River Valley baseball coach and clinic organizer Andy Cowley.  Registration is from 8:15 to 9 a.m.  Cost of the clinic is $30 with checks payable to River Valley Legion.

Davenport has been head coach at Madison College (formerly MATC) since 2003.  In 2010, he won an American Baseball Coaches Association award for his coaching success.  Davenport also serves as a professional scout for the Chicago White Sox.

Former MATC head coach Leo Kalinowski will also speak at the clinic.  Kalinowski was recently named head softball coach for the Wolfpack.  While coaching baseball his teams won three NJCAA National Baseball Championships from 1995-97 and he was a three-time National Coach of the Year.

Jake Spaeth, an assistant coach at Madison College will also present.  He is a former Division 1 baseball player who played at Dayton in 2008-2009.

Andy Cowley will also speak.  He is currently the head baseball coach at River Valley and an assistant coach at Madison College.

Madison College players will be assisting with the drills part of the clinic.
