UW-La Crosse’s Mane and UW-Superior’s Smith Top All-WIAC Men’s Basketball Team; Berkhof Named Coach of the Year

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Tony Mane and UW-Superior’s Jake Smith were chosen Co-Players of the Year to headline the 10 individuals selected to the 2010-11 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men’s Basketball Team by the league coaches, while UW-River Falls’ Jeff Berkhof was named the Coach of the Year.

This marks the second time in the last three years and sixth time in WIAC history that the Player of the Year honor has been shared.

Mane captured first team recognition for the second straight year after claiming honorable mention status in 2008.  He is the fourth individual in program history to secure the conference’s Player of the Year plaque.  This season, Mane leads the conference with 25.6 points per game, 3.15 three-point field goals made per game and a .879 free throw percentage, while ranking second with a .485 three-point field goal percentage.  He reached double-figures in scoring in all 26 games, including surpassing the 30-point barrier nine times with a season-best 39 points against UW-Stout Jan. 26.

The all-time leading scorer at UW-La Crosse, Mane finished his career with 2,095 points to rank sixth on the WIAC chart.  His 666 points this year set a single-season school record.

Smith is the first player in program listings to secure first team honors three times (2008, 2010), while adding honorable mention status in 2009, and the second to receive the league’s Player of the Year honor.  This season, he ranks third in the WIAC with 16.9 points per game and sixth with 6.3 rebounds per game.  Smith reached double figures in scoring in 25 of 27 games during the 2010-11 campaign and posted four double-doubles (points-rebounds).  He exceeded the 20-point mark in nine contests, including a season-high 29 points against UW-Platteville Dec. 4.

The all-time leading scorer at UW-Superior, Smith completed his career with 1,910 points and is just the 12th player in conference history to surpass 1,900 points.

UW-Stout’s Eric Hostetter was the only additional repeat selection on the first team from last season.

Berkhof has directed UW-River Falls to a 20-7 record this season, including a school-record 15-game winning streak and the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship.  The 20 wins mark an 11-game improvement from a year ago and represent the first 20-win season since the 2003-04 campaign.  After placing ninth in the league standings a year ago, Berhkof orchestrated a second-place finish for the Falcons this season.

An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.
