It doesn't get much closer than the race for February's 2011 girls basketball team of the month, as Westby tallied exactly one vote more (971) than second place Amery (970) to earn the honor. Both tallied 45 percent of the total vote while Edgerton, Oconomowoc and Spencer rounded out the nominees. (View full result here.)

The Norsemen came close to winning the Coulee Conference last season, but this season Westby used a strong February to finally get their own hands on league laurels. Westby went a perfect 6-0 in the month including a 4-0 league mark to secure its first conference title outright. The Norsemen also scored a big non-conference win over Sparta to cap off a very impressive 21-1 overall record as well. Led by senior Jenna Engh and sophomore Abby Midtlein, the Division 4 Reedsburg regional's top seed will likely enter the posteason as one of the sectional favorites.

In an equally tight race for girls player of the month, Green Bay Preble's Kenzie Perttu pulled out a late 48-vote victory over Luck's Avery Steen to win February's 2011 Player of the Month Honors. Perttu tallied 48 percent of the overall vote, Steen scored 46 percent, while Fennimore's Breland Prochaska, The Prairie School's Gabrielle Ortiz and Young Coggs Prep's Chelsea Rhodes rounded out the five nominees. With Perttu playing her best basketball of the season, Green Bay Preble is a dangerous team. The junior guard scored her 1,000th point against crosstown rival Green Bay East a few weeks ago and torched opponents for almost 21 points per game in February alone. In a pivotal FRCC matchup, Perttu recorded a season-high 33 points in a tight 64-55 win over Sheboygan North and helped grant the Hornets to the #4-seed and host for Saturday's WIAA regional final. With a season average of 20.25 points per game, Perttu currently ranks No. 2 in Division 1 and No. 12 overall in state scoring.
