Two of the top backcourt players in Wisconsin headline the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 3 All-State squad.

Both sophomore Bronson Koenig of La Crosse Aquinas and senior Ben Stelzer of Manitowoc Roncalli were unanimous choices on the Division 3 WBCA All-State team, released today on WisSports.net.

Koenig, a 6-foot-2 point guard, led Aquinas to the championship in the Mississippi Valley Conference and an appearance in the WIAA Division 3 State Tournament. A highly touted national recruit, Koenig already has scholarship offers from Marquette, Minnesota, North Carolina, Virginia and Wisconsin, among others. He is ranked No. 1 in the class of 2013 by WisSports.net.

Stelzer, a 6-1 combination guard, led Roncalli to a share of the title in the Olympian Conference with Brillion. A terrific long-distance shooter who played on the varsity squad for coach Joe Rux in each of the past four seasons, Stelzer scored 40 points, including 27 in the fourth period, in the Jets’ sectional semifinal loss to Wrightstown. He averaged over 25 points per game to rank among the top five scorers in the state. For the year, Stelzer was 123 of 239 from three point range this season, a near 52% clip.  Stelzer will play college basketball next season at NCAA Division II Michigan Tech.

Other first-team members include Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau junior Riley Bambenek, Viroqua senior Ben Brooke, Oconto senior Ryan DePouw, Racine St. Catherine’s junior Jordan Fouse, Lakeside Lutheran senior Jake Jarnigo, St. John’s Military Academy senior Kevin Mays, Brodhead senior J.J. Panoske, Winneconne senior Austin Ryf and Whitefish Bay Dominican sophomore Duane Wilson.

Bambenek, a 6-3 combination guard, played a huge role in helping Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau capture the championship in the Coulee Conference with a 12-0 record. He averaged a team-best 16.8 points per game while also chipping in 5.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists per contest.

Brooke, a 6-6 forward, is a relentless rebounder on both ends of the court and he developed a very dependable offensive game as a senior for coach Joel Anderson. Brooke averaged 24.1 ppg for the Blackhawks, who finished the campaign with a 19-6 record.

DePouw, a 6-4 small forward, had a breakout season for first-year Oconto coach Kale Proksch. He led the entire state in scoring at 30.0 ppg and pumped in a career-high 45 in a victory over Sturgeon Bay in February. DePouw is a three-year varsity letter winner for the Blue Devils.

Fouse, a 6-5 wing play, does a bit of everything for longtime St. Catherine’s coach Bob Letsch. He led the Angels in scoring (15.5 ppg), rebounding (9.2 rpg), assists (4.5 apg) and blocked shots (2.3 bspg).

Jarnigo, a quick 5-10 point guard, is the leading scorer for one of the state’s more prolific offensive teams at Lakeside Lutheran. He is averaging 17.7 ppg for coach Jim Bauer and led the Warriors to their first-ever WIAA State Tournament berth along with the championship in the Northern Division of the Capitol Conference.

Mays, a bruising 6-4 forward, is an athletic and extremely aggressive forward who helped the Lancers capture the title in the Northern Division of the Midwest Classic Conference by averaging 19.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest for first-year coach Tim Richert.

Panoske, a 6-10 forward, signed a national letter of intent to play college basketball at Milwaukee last November and then turned in a solid senior season for coach Brian Kammerer. Panoske averaged 22.8 ppg while leading the Cardinals to a 14-10 record.

Ryf, a 6-1 point guard, led Winneconne to a successful season in the Eastern Valley Conference by averaging a team-best 20.4 ppg. He also grabbed 5.5 rebounds per game while helping the Wolves to a 16-7 record under veteran coach Ralph Larson.

Wilson, a 6-1 point guard, is an extremely quick and highly competitive player who led Dominican to a 16-0 record and the title in the very difficult Southern Division of the Midwest Classic Conference. Wilson averaged 16.7 ppg for coach Paul Wollersheim and is one of the top collegiate prospects in the state in the class of 2013.
