Week 2 WSN Coaches Poll

Week 1 WSN Coaches Poll

While the top-ranked teams remain unchanged in the Week 2 Coaches Poll, there is considerable turnover in every division after a wild week that included eight Top 5 teams going down. After just two weeks, only 128 of the 437 football teams in the state of Wisconsin are unbeaten, including just 16 in Division 1. After a hectic week, it's time to see how everyone fared.

Division 1:

Waukesha West is a unanimous #1 in the state's largest division, following up last year's title with impressive early wins over Milwaukee Bradley Tech and Wisconsin Lutheran. Milwaukee Marquette and Homestead were ranked second and third respectively last week, but both powerhouse programs went down. Marquette was shutout 16-0 by Franklin while Homestead was shocked by Waterford 17-15. The teams fall to the #10 and #12 spots this week. Kenosha Bradford has started 2-0 and moves into the #2 spot, followed by Arrowhead, Verona, and Appleton North. Green Bay Preble has beaten Bay Port and Ashwaubenon, normally two of the better FRCC programs, in the early going and debuts in the rankings at #14. Hudson traveled 338 miles to Kenosha Bradford last week and were leading in the second half before fading for a 33-13 loss. That performance, coupled with their Week 1 shutout win over Wisconsin Rapids, meant the Raiders only dropped from #14 to #15 this week.

Division 2:

Waunakee is once again on top of the Division 2 rankings, followed by perennial contenders Monona Grove, Marshfield, Kimberly, and Menomonie in the top five. Waterford crashes the party at #6 this week after knocking off Homestead 17-15 on a last second field goal. After being unranked last week, it is one of the highest debuts we've seen in the last few years, deservedly so. One new team to this week's rankings is Fort Atkinson. The Blackhawks are a good story of perseverance after struggling for several years following a move to the larger Badger-South Conference. They enter at #12 this week.

Division 3:

Division 3 was wild last week, with seven ranked teams losing. West De Pere remains the undisputed top dog however. The Phantoms defeated former #2 Waupaca 27-7, knocking the Comets down to #12 this week. #3 Catholic Memorial went down to Milwaukee Riverside and slide to #10. Xavier and Kewaskum are no surprises at #2 and #3, but New Berlin Eisenhower (who was unranked last week), Luxemburg-Casco, and Mosinee are new faces in the top of the rankings behind them. Jefferson may be a bit under-ranked at #7 after wins over quality teams Lakeside Lutheran and Marshall in the early-going. Wisconsin Lutheran has started 0-2 again this year against a brutal early schedule consisting of Waukesha West and Milwaukee Marquette, but the strength of program still shows through as they come in at #13 in this week's rankings.

Division 4:

Big Foot continues to occupy the top spot in Division 4, although last week's #2 team Kewaunee has slid to #12. The defending champion Storm were defeated 31-26 Friday night by Wrightstown, who jumps all the way to #3 this week. Nekoosa is #2 while River Valley and Somerset come in at #4 and #5 respectively. With losses by six ranked teams, there was plenty of shuffling. Bloomer, Wautoma, Northwestern, Baldwin-Woodville, and Marshall all lost in Week 2 and fell out completely, to be replaced by Valders, Spooner, Durand, Lake Mills, and Mayville. Expect to see a lot of turnover on a weekly basis in a division that has many good teams, but few elite teams at this point.

Division 5:

Brillion and Colby continue to be neck and neck at the top of the Division 5 poll, with Lancaster and Cedar Grove-Belgium in a virtual dead-heat behind them. Four ranked teams suffered losses in Week 2, while another had a loss retroactively applied to its record. Arcadia, Pardeeville, Oostburg, and Howards Grove all went down last week and drop out of the poll, although each is still a strong contender and should return to the rankings at some point this year. Tuesday afternoon, after most coaches had already submitted ballots, WSN learned that Bonduel was forced to forfeit a Week 1 win over Crivitz. Therefore their ranking this week was largely unchanged, going from #6 to #7. One of the new team's to this week's rankings is #15 Manawa. The Wolves went just 1-8 last year, but have opened with non-conference wins over Marion/Tigerton, last year's CWC-10 champ, and Oostburg, who claimed the Central Lakeshore title.

Division 6:

Edgar and Saint Mary's Springs are once again #1 and #2 in the Division 6 poll, although the teams behind them has changed. #3 Bangor went down to Seneca and #4 Pacelli lost to Aquinas. Coleman, Regis, and Shiocton now round out the top five. Iowa-Grant has posted wins over a solid Randolph team and against larger Richland Center in the early going and debuts in the rankings at #12.

Division 7:

Potosi continues to lead the Division 7 rankings, but Seneca is hot on its tail, especially after the Indians defeated a strong Bangor team on the road last week. There is some minor shuffling in the top five, but the big story is lower in the poll. Four teams ranked between 6 and 12 lost this week, including last year's title game participants Catholic Central and Gilman, who each sit at 0-2 now and outside the rankings. Living Word Lutheran knocked off Catholic Central, and the Timberwolves are now ranked #9 this week. Highland, who has won just three games total the past three years, is off to a 2-0 start in the Six Rivers Conference under first year coach Shaun Reuter and are ranked #14 this week.
