What started as a slow-moving affair with the teams tied 0-0 at halftime ended in dramatic fashion as Wrightstown capped a perfect season with a 28-26 double-overtime victory over Somerset in the Division 4 state championship game.

Somerset had an outstanding opportunity to score in the second quarter but a bobbled snap on the one yard line was recovered by Wrightstown for a touchback. The teams traded blows but mustered little offense in the first half, which ended in a scoreless tie.

The game opened up a bit in the third quarter, with Somerset's Vernon Breault finally breaking the seal on the end zone with a 1-yard score. Wrightstown answered when senior Jackson Fox scored from a yard out, the first of three touchdowns on the day for the Olympian-Packerland Large Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year.

Fox added a score to open the fourth quarter, but Somerset scored the game's next 14 points to go ahead 20-12 with just over two minutes left in the game. However, they couldn't deliver the knockout blow as the two-point conversion following the second touchdown was stuffed by the Tigers.

Helped by a solid kick return and a late hit penalty, Wrightstown quickly marched dow the field, eventually moving inside the Somerset 5-yard line. With just 23 seconds remaining in the game, quarterback Jordan Johnson completed a quick pass to tight end Cody Lukes, pulling the Tigers within two. Johnson kept the ball on the two-point conversion to tie it up at 20 and force overtime.

The defenses dominated the first extra period, as neither team was able to muster a first down.

Taking the ball to start the second overtime, Fox rushed for his third score of the game, this time from 23 yards out. Johnson ran the keeper again on the two-point conversion, and again he found the end zone to put Wrightstown up 28-20.

Somerset scored on the fourth play of its overtime possession, setting the stage for a possible game-tying two-point conversion. Somerset went with its bread and butter, running the option to the left. Quarterback Tyler Ledbetter was stopped well short of the goal line however, and the victorious Tigers defense raced to celebrate with teammates who streamed onto the field.

Tomorrow's action gets underway at 10 am with the Division 3 state title game between defending champion West De Pere and longtime powerhouse Wisconsin Lutheran.
