If last year's performance in the Division 3 state title game victory over Catholic Memorial was the breakout performance for West De Pere quarterback Jay Tollefson, today's showing was his coronation as the best high school football player in Wisconsin.

Racking up 244 yards of total offense and making an impact on special teams with a 71-yard kick return, Tollefson accounted for five touchdowns as the Phantoms knocked off Wisconsin Lutheran 39-24 to claim a second straight Division 3 state title.

Tollefson opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run on the Phantoms opening drive, but saw his team go down 10-7 after a Wisco field goal and blocked punt return for a score. Another 1-yard scoring plunge with 8:08 left in the second quarter put West De Pere ahead 13-7 before Adihia Bell answered with a 2-yard score to make it 17-13 in favor of the Vikings.

As he has done numerous times this year, Tollefson took the game over from there, throwing for two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the half and opening the scoring in the third quarter with a 2-yard scoring run as West De Pere went up 32-17.

Wisco would not go away however, as Bell went in from 16 yards out to pull within one score at 32-24, but Spencer Turiff provided the final margin of victory when he took a jet sweep 55-yards for a touchdown on the opening play of the fourth quarter.

Wisconsin Lutheran had chances to close the gap, but failed on a 4th and goal attempt from the 1 yard line and West De Pere controlled the clock the rest of the way to hold on for a second straight title.

Tollefson finished the game with 31 carries for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 6 of 11 passes for 61 yards and 2 scores. His 71-yard kick return in the first set up one of his short touchdown runs.

Next up is the Division 2 state title game as Waunakee goes for a third straight state championship against upstart Waterford.
