Week 1 WisSports.net/WBCA Coaches Poll

A week and a half into the 2011-12 season finds quite a discrepancy in the number of games teams have played. There are still a handful of teams that have yet to take the court prior to Tuesday night, while others have already gotten in four or even five games at this point. As usual, this means it is still tough to get a feel for where teams stand. Nonetheless, its time to take a look at this week's Coaches Poll.

Division 1

Germantown remains atop the Division 1 rankings. The Warhawks' only game to this point was last Tuesday night when they scored an impressive 73-58 win over Brookfield Central, who had been ranked #8 last week. The loss dropped the Lancers to #14 this week. The Milwaukee City Conference has a strong presence in this week's poll, as after #2 Madison Memorial the top five goes Milwaukee Riverside, Milwaukee King, and Milwaukee Hamilton. Appleton East advanced to state last year but has gotten off to a slow start this year, going 1-3 so far. The Patriots are unranked this week after checking in at #11 last week. Brookfield East, who scored an impressive 73-52 win over Menomonee Falls on Friday, makes the highest debut this week at #10.

Division 2

Onalaska is one of the teams that has yet to take the court, but the Hilltoppers remain in the top spot of the Division 2 Coaches Poll. They finally get underway with a home contest against LaCrescent (MN) tonight. Friday night they open up Mississippi Valley Conference play by hosting La Crosse Central, who is ranked #14 in Division 1 this week. Rice Lake once again checks in at #2. Beaver Dam was unranked to start the season but the Golden Beavers posted a 70-62 win over Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday that really opened some eyes. It ended Wisco's 28-game conference winning streak and was Beaver Dam's first win over the Vikings since 1998, a span of 26 games. They move into the #3 spot this week while Wisconsin Lutheran drops from #9 to #12. Waunakee was ranked 4th last week and split games against Division 1 powerhouse Milwaukee Hamilton (loss) and Madison Edgewood (overtime win), and only drop one spot to #5.

Division 3

Not much changes in Division 3 as the top five remains:  East Troy, Aquinas, Little Chute, Racine St. Catherine's, and Brillion. There was some minor shuffling in spots 6-11, but it's a different story after that. #12 Fox Valley Lutheran, #13 Two Rivers, and #14 Wrightstown all lost last week and drop from the rankings. Marshall moves up from #15 to #12, while Lakeside Lutheran, Sheboygan Falls, and Westby enter the rankings.

Division 4

Dominican was one vote shy of being a unanimous #1 but the remain the prohibitive favorite in D4. Cuba City is solidly in the #2 position behind legendary coach Jerry Petitgoue. Laconia, Auburndale, and Blair-Taylor round out the top five. Elk Mound, Fall Creek, Regis, Cambridge, and Marathon fell out of the rankings after suffering losses last week, with Amherst, Cadott, Saint Mary's Springs, Algoma, and Howards Grove moving in.

Division 5

Two-time defending champion Randolph is a unanimous #1 selection in the Division 5 rankings, as the Rockets are off to a strong 3-0 start. Sheboygan Lutheran suffered a tough overtime loss to Oostburg last Tuesday, but rebounded with wins over Cedar Grove-Belgium and Living Word Lutheran to move into the #2 position. Racine Lutheran had been #2 but went down by just two points to ranked Division 1 Racine Park and move to #4 this week. Clayton remains in the #3 spot.
