Week 1 WisSports.net/WBCA Coaches Poll

We've already seen a number of big games and upsets in the first couple weeks of the 2011-12 season, and it is shaping up to be an exciting ride this year. With so many ranked teams facing each other so early in the season, there has been a good amount of change in the rankings. It's time to look at how everyone fared in a busy Week 2.

Division 1

Milwaukee Vincent remains in the top spot of the Division 1 poll, as they scored a dominating 85-51 win over Madison East, who features Wisconsin recruit Makailah Dyer, last week. Despite losing early in the season, De Pere had been ranked #2 last week. The Redbirds went down to Kimberly 48-33 last Tuesday, but did rebound with a pair of nice wins over Waunakee and Madison Edgewood over the weekend as they have faced perhaps the state's toughest schedule to this point. At 3-2, they dropped to #9 this week, one spot behind Kimberly. Janesville Parker moves into the #2 position, while Nicolet, Verona, and DSHA round out the top five.

Division 2

Defending champion New London is once again on top of the Division 2 rankings, as the Bulldogs went 3-0 last week with wins over Waupaca, Little Chute, and Pulaski. They've yet to give up more than 30 points in a game. New Berlin Eisenhower is a strong #2, while Beaver Dam is once again ranked third. Baraboo had occupied the #4 position, but went down to DeForest last week, although star junior Samantha Terry did not play due to an injury. The Thunderbirds are #15 this week. The Norskies of DeForest move up to #6. Waunakee went down to De Pere and Luxemburg-Casco over the weekend, dropping the Warriors out of the rankings. Wisconsin Lutheran took their place in the poll as the only new team to this week's rankings.

Division 3

Dominican is still #1 in Division 3, but Richland Center is nipping at their heels in the #2 spot. Things got a little hairy for the rest of the top five though, as former #2 Kewaunee, #4 Prairie du Chien, and #5 Columbus all lost last week. Kewaunee slides to #10 this week, Columbus to #8, and Prairie drops all the way out of the rankings. Denmark, the team that defeated Kewaunee, debuts at #14 this week. A bit lower in the rankings, #10 Fox Valley Lutheran, #13 Altoona, and #15 Oostburg all went down last week as well with Lakeside Lutheran, Baldwin-Woodville, and Barron moving into the Top Fifteen.

Division 4

Regis is the unanimous top pick in the Division 4 Coaches Poll, while Algoma is the unanimous #2 choice. Oshkosh Lourdes, and Neillsville are not far behind, while Fennimore has taken Belleville's spot at #5. The Wildcats suffered a pair of losses last week and drop completely out of this week's rankings. Don't look now but a sleeping giant may have been awoken; Cuba City entered the season unranked, but the Cubans scored a pair of solid wins last week -- a 46-44 buzzer-beater over Lancaster and a 72-19 lambasting of Riverdale, who defeated them last year. Cuba City hosts Division 3's second-ranked team Richland Center tonight. Cameron and Shoreland Lutheran are also new to this week's poll.

Division 5

Newman Catholic lost four starters from last year's team that claimed a second straight state title, but got the early nod as the top team in Division 5. They have shown that ranking to be well-earned after posting a 50-39 win over Division 1 Wausau West and a 68-14 blowout of Prentice, who has not lost a conference game in three years, in the past week. There was some minor shuffling in the top ten, while Winter, River Ridge, and Prentice dropped out of the rankings following losses last week.
