Action continues to heat up on the hardwood, with many girls hoops teams entering conference play. With increased familiarity and heightened intensity, we often begin to see better games overall. There still are a few outstanding non-conference games sprinkled in as well however. While no top-ranked teams went down like we saw on the boys side, it was a week full of changes, especially in Division 3. Let's take a look at some of the storylines in each of the five divisions.

Division 1

Milwaukee Vincent, Janesville Parker, and Nicolet could all make convincing arguments for the top spot in Division 1, but it is Vincent who once again occupies the top spot. We get an early-season treat tonight though, as the Vikings take on Parker in a 1 vs. 2 match-up. Nicolet's Brittney Fair is off to a torrid start, averaging 27 points per game, including a season-high 30 in a 48-47 win over Divine Savior Holy Angels on Saturday. Speaking of DSHA, they may be 4-2 on the year, but Coach Scott Witt's team's losses are to #3 Nicolet and #4 Pius XI. The Dashers are 7th this week. Racine Case claimed victories over Milwaukee King and Beaver Dam over the weekend, despite missing All-State selection Jameeka Bouie, who could be out for the year with an injury. The Eagles soar from #15 to #5 in the latest WisSports.net Coaches Poll.

Division 2

Defending champion New London holds a precarious lead atop the Division 2 Coaches Poll, with New Berlin Eisenhower and Cudahy nipping at their heels. In a rematch of last season's title game, the Bulldogs knocked off Bay Conference rival Luxemburg-Casco 46-15 Friday night. Reedsburg and La Crosse Logan round out the top five. Beaver Dam had been #3, but the Golden Beavers' loss to Racine Case dropped them to #7 in this week's rankings. New teams to the poll include Holmen, Hayward, Waupun, and Monona Grove.

Division 3

Dominican solidified its grip on the top spot of the rankings with a pair of home wins last week. Former #2 Richland Center wasn't so fortunate however, as the Hornets went down on the road to Cuba City, 62-50. Head coach Steve Board's group rebounded with a 33-29 win on Thursday over Westby, a team that advanced to the state tournament in Division 4 last year. Richland Center falls to fifth in this week's poll, behind Dominican, Lomira, Brillion, and Freedom. Edgerton, East Troy, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Lakeside Lutheran, Baldwin-Woodville, and Denmark were also ranked teams that went down last week, throwing the rankings upside-down. Several of them dropped out completely, with Barron, Berlin, Kettle Moraine Lutheran, Adams-Friendship, and Lake Mills the beneficiaries to move into the poll.

Division 4

While Division 3 was topsy-turvy, Division 4 was a model of consistency, with just three losses by teams ranked in last week's poll. Defending champion Regis continues to occupy the top spot, followed by Algoma, Oshkosh Lourdes, Neillsville, and Fennimore. Cuba City scored wins over Richland Center and Darlington in the last week and move from #11 to #6. Darlington had been ranked 8th in Division 4, but dropped out this week. A total of 26 teams are unbeaten in Division 4, including 14 of the 15 teams ranked in this week's poll. The only team to be ranked with a loss is Deerfield. The Demons opened the year with a defeat at the hands of Lake Mills (now ranked #15 in D3) but have won five straight, including impressive road wins at Lakeside Lutheran and Edgerton (both ranked in D3 at the time) last week.

Division 5

Newman Catholic isn't quite a unanimous #1 in Division 5, but the Cardinals are the strong leader in the rankings. Black Hawk is once again #2, followed by Assumption, Seneca, and Owen-Withee. As always, the Six Rivers Conference is well-represented, with four teams (Black Hawk, Highland, Juda, and Barneveld) in the top eleven. The bottom third of the rankings are heavy with teams from the northwest part of the state:  #10 Washburn, #12 Mellen, #13 South Shore, #14 Northwood, and #15 Shell Lake.
