Austin Hawkins of Auburndale, Corey Vaassen of Cuba City and Duane Wilson and Jamall Taylor of Whitefish Bay Dominican have earned unanimous first-team all-state recognition on the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 4 All-State squad.

Hawkins (6-4) did a bit of everything while helping Auburndale to a 22-2 record and the title in the Southern Division of the Marawood Conference. He led the Apaches in scoring at 18.4 points per game while also ranking among team leaders in rebounding, assists and steals.

Vaassen (6-3) shot 63 percent from the field and led Cuba City to an unbeaten record heading into the WIAA Division 4 State Tournament by averaging a team-high 19.5 ppg. Vaassen also led the Cubans in rebounding (5.0 rpg) and steals (4.3 spg).

Wilson (6-3) is a dynamic point guard with stellar athleticism and length. He averaged 17.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 5.6 apg while also spearheading the Knights’ strong defense with his quickness and aggressiveness. Wilson has NCAA Division I scholarship offers from Marquette, Memphis, Missouri and Virginia Tech, among others.

Taylor (6-3) teams with Wilson in Dominican’s backcourt, giving coach Paul Wollersheim perhaps the state’s premier guard combination. He led Dominican in scoring at 20.0 ppg while also contributing 4.6 rpg. Taylor is receiving recruiting attention from a large number of Division I and II schools.

Other first-team members include Laconia junior Tyler Semenas, Colfax junior Lane Olson, Destiny sophomore Jerrelle Deberry, Three Lakes senior Ross Thorn, Cuba City senior Trent Denlinger and Bangor senior Connor Kaiser.

Semenas (6-3) helped Laconia to a 19-4 record and a runner-up finish in the Wisconsin Flyway Conference standings by averaging a team-best 18.7 ppg. The skilled wing guard also contributed 6.3 rpg, 2.4 apg and 2.4 spg while shooting 56 percent from the field and 41 percent from beyond the three-point arc.

Olson (6-6) is a high-flying forward who led Colfax to an appearance in the WIAA State Tournament. He averaged 13.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg and blocked 65 shots through 22 games for the Vikings.

Deberry (6-4) had an extremely strong season for Destiny after attending Milwaukee Hamilton as a freshman. He averaged a whopping 25.7 ppg against some quality competition, scoring 29 against Dominican, 28 against West Allis Central and 25 against both Little Chute and Milwaukee Vincent.

Thorn (6-8) was the best big man in the Northern Lakes Conference and led Three Lakes in both scoring (17.4 ppg) and rebounding (10.7 rpg). He shot 65 percent from the field and had more than two blocked shots per outing.

Denlinger (6-6) used his superior size and strength to control things in the paint for Cuba City. He averaged 10.0 ppg and 4.6 rpg while shooting 67 percent from the field and from the foul line.

Kaiser (5-11) helped Bangor to an 18-7 record and a second-place showing to Royall in the Scenic Bluffs Conference by averaging 21.0 ppg. A three-year varsity performer for the Cardinals, Kaiser scored more than 1,000 points in his career and had 36 in a victory over Hillsboro.
