All-WIAC Baseball Squad Announced; UW-La Crosse’s Schwarz Receives Coaching Honor
 
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Jay Fanta, along with UW-Whitewater’s Jared Fon and Marty Herum shared the Position Player of the Year honor, while UW-Stevens Point’s Cam Seidl was named the Pitcher of the Year to lead the 20 individuals selected to the 2012 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Baseball Team by the league coaches.  UW-La Crosse head coach Chris Schwarz was chosen the Coach of the Year.
 
Fanta tops the league with a .420 batting average and .492 on-base percentage, while ranking third with 66 hits and 97 total bases, fifth with a .618 slugging percentage and 22 walks, sixth with 39 runs scored, 14 doubles and five home runs and ninth with 35 runs batted in.
 
Fon is second in the conference with 69 hits, 44 runs scored and 105 total bases, third with a .397 batting average and a .457 on-base percentage, fourth with 39 runs batted in, fifth with six home runs, and sixth with a .603 slugging percentage and 14 doubles.
 
Herum leads the WIAC with 73 hits, 57 runs batted in and 110 total bases, while ranking second with a .412 batting average and 16 doubles, fourth with a .621 slugging percentage, sixth with five home runs and 10th with 36 runs scored.
 
Seidl leads the conference with 75.1 innings pitched and a .179 opponent batting average, while ranking second with a 1.67 earned run average, third with three saves and sixth with five wins and 53 strikeouts.
 
Repeat selections on the first team from a year ago included:  UW-La Crosse’s Tim Verthein; UW-Oshkosh’s Luke Westphal; and UW-Stevens Point’s Justin Jirschele and Sean Gerber.  Jirschele was also a first team choice in 2010.
 
UW-La Crosse head coach Chris Schwarz was selected the Coach of the Year after directing the Eagles to a 33-9 overall record and the program’s first WIAC regular-season championship since 2000.  The Eagles also won their first WIAC tournament crown since 2000 and earned a bid into the NCAA Division III Championship.  Schwarz also received the coaching honor in 2006.
 
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season.  It included one member from each school.

UW-La Crosse’s Scray and UW-Stout’s Duske Share Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award

 
MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s Garrett Scray and UW-Stout’s Jake Duske have been named co-recipients of the 2012 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Baseball Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
A senior from De Pere, Wis. (West De Pere), Scray carries a 3.65 grade point average and is majoring in community health education with a minor in pre-physician assistant studies.  He has been recognized on UW-La Crosse’s Dean’s List and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.
 
Scray is a two-time All-WIAC honorable mention selection and helped UW-La Crosse to the WIAC regular-season and tournament championships this season.  He is a two-year team captain.
 
He is a member of UW-La Crosse’s Pre-Physician Assistant Club and served as a Patient Care Technician at Mayo Clinic Health System.
 
Duske, a senior from Montrose, Minn. (Buffalo), is majoring in business administration and owns a 3.58 grade point average.  He was named to the 2012 College Sports Information Directors of America NCAA Division III Academic All-District Six First Team and is a two-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.  Duske has received the Chancellor’s Award at UW-Stout and the school’s Scholar-Athlete Award.
 
A team captain, Duske received All-WIAC honorable mention honors in 2011.  A member of Sigma Beta Delta, he volunteers with a homework club at a local elementary school and has volunteered at several youth baseball camps.
 
Also nominated for this year’s scholar-athlete award were:  UW-Oshkosh’s Kyle Van Abel (Sr., Kaukauna, Wis.); UW-Superior’s Nick Bursik (Sr., Woodbury, Minn./Stillwater); and UW-Whitewater’s Eric Schmitz (Sr., Fond du Lac, Wis.).
 
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is named after Max Sparger, who served as commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference from July, 1971 - July, 1993.
 
In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.50 grade point average. In addition, he must be in his last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.
