For the second straight year the Somerset football team had a state title game end on a failed two-point conversion in overtime. Only this time the Spartans came out on the winning end, claiming a thrilling 35-33 win over Big Foot for the Division 4 championship.

It was sweet redemption for the team, who had a title in their sights last year before allowing a touchdown and two-point conversion to Wrightstown in the final 30 seconds of regulation to force overtime. After a scoreless first overtime period in that one, Wrightstown scored and converted another two-point conversion. Somerset got a touchdown but failed on the two-point conversion, taking home the silver ball as runner-up.

The 2012 championship game followed a familiar script, as Big Foot scored in the fourth quarter to tie it up and the game went to overtime. This time Somerset got the ball first, scoring on a 5-yard run from quarterback Tyler Ledbetter. Robert LeRoy ran in the two-point conversion for a 35-27 lead.

Big Foot answered with a 19-yard passing touchdown from Carter Hehr to Mason Dixon, but Hehr's two-point conversion pass fell incomplete and Somerset won the title 35-33.

A dominating rushing attack drove Somerset all day, as Ledbetter and Vernon Breault combined for 57 carries and 364 yards on the ground. The Spartans only threw it twice, but both plays went for key pickups to talented junior tight end Gaelin Elmore, including a leaping 14-yard touchdown.

Big Foot's Mason Dixon, the Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch Award winner on WisSports.net and the WFCA Offensive Player of the Year, rushed 24 times for 163 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Hehr added 2 rushing and 1 passing score.

In the end it was Somerset's rushing attack that led the way, allowing the Spartans to get redemption on the way to a state title.
