Ben Best of Drummond and Aaron Retzlaff of Randolph lead the way as unanimous selections to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 5 All-State Team.

Best and Retzlaff are repeat first-team picks from a year ago.

The 6-foot-6 Best is an athletic forward who led Drummond in both scoring (18.3 ppg) and rebounding (9.5 rpg) while also handing out 73 assists and coming up with 72 steals during the season.

Retzlaff (6-4) does a bit of everything for the Rockets. He leads the team in rebounding at 8.3 rpg while finishing second in scoring at 13.0 ppg. He also finished second in assists with 75 and generally guards the opponent’s top baseline player.

The rest of the first team includes Cassville senior Sebastion Apers, Laona/Wabeno senior Logan Chrisman, Luck senior John Denny, Royall senior Sam Murphy, Clayton senior Zach Schradle, Racine Lutheran senior Clay Stevens, Green Bay NEW Lutheran senior Travis Voigt and Elmwood senior Logan Wolf.

Apers (6-2) is a foreign exchange student from Belgium who earned Player of the Year honors in the Western Division of the Six Rivers Conference after averaging 15.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for a Cassville squad that went 22-4 under veteran coach Dennis Uppena.

Chrisman (5-10) led Laona/Wabeno to a 19-5 record in its first year as a coop program by averaging 21.3 ppg for coach Bill Taylor. Chrisman was chosen as the Player of the Year in the Northern Lakes Conference and scored a season-best 30 points in a victory over Florence.

Denny (6-5), who recently gave a verbal commitment to play for coach Paul Eberhart at UW-Superior, helped Luck to a share of the title in the Western Division of the Lakeland Conference with Grantsburg by averaging 14.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per contest for coach Rick Giller, who guided Luck to a 22-3 record.

Murphy (6-4), who plans to play college basketball for coach Aaron Aanonsen at Lakeland College, is an excellent all-around player with good size and length. He averaged 13.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg and 5.1 apg while helping Royall to a 23-4 record and the title in the Scenic Bluffs Conference.

Schradle (6-4), who will join Denny at UW-Superior, was chosen as the Player of the Year in the Central Division of the Lakeland Conference after leading Clayton in scoring (23.1 ppg) and rebounding (9.0 rpg) while leading the team to a 23-1 record.

Stevens (6-4) is a four-year varsity player for coach Jeff Christensen at Racine Lutheran. He earned first-team all-league honors in the Metro Classic Conference after averaging 20.2 ppg and leading a young Racine Lutheran squad to a 14-13 record and a spot in the WIAA Division 5 sectional finals against Randolph. Stevens scored a career-high 35 points in a victory over cross-town rival The Prairie School as a senior.

Voigt (5-8) is a two-time Player of the Year award winner in the Packerland Conference for two-time defending league champion Green Bay NEW Lutheran. A quick, heady point guard who can score and distribute, Voigt averaged a team-best 14.2 ppg for a Blazers squad that entered the WIAA State Tournament with a 27-0 record.

Wolf (6-2) earned first-team all-Dunn-St. Croix Conference laurels as a senior when he averaged 16.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg and 5.8 apg for an Elmwood squad that brings a 23-4 record into the WIAA State Tournament.
