Division 4 Semi-Final Notes

Algoma dominates the paint in win over Cuba City

Algoma scored the first 10 points of the game and never trailed to advance to the Division 4 state championship game. 

The Wolves led 12-5 after the first quarter and outscored Cuba City in every quarter to cruise to a 60-39 victory. 

Algoma's lead Cuba City 30-18 at halftime behind freshman Anna Dier's 10 points and senior Taylor Schmidt had 5 points and 6 assists. Cuba City shot just 23.1% from the field in the first half and was outscored in the paint 18-6.

The shooting woes continued for the Cubans in the second half shooting 27% from the field and finished just 25% for the game. 

Both teams played played high pressure defense which resulted in 31 combined turnovers with the Cubans finishing with 16 of those. The Wolves were able to capitalize on the turnovers scoring 19 points off them while Cuba City only scored only 8 points off the Wolves miscues. 

Algoma dominated the paint outscoring the Cubans 40-18. Schmidt played a large role in the advantage with her ability to find the open player.

The Wolves were led by Dier's 18 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks. Schmidt finished with 13 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds and 2 steals. 

The Cubans were led by sophomore Chloe Pustina's 16 points and 2 steals while freshman Jessi Marti added 11 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Algoma will try to win their first WIAA state title since 1986 on Saturday.

Colfax tops The Prairie School 

In a contest that featured a number of lead changes Colfax's free throw shooting lifted them past Gabbi Ortiz and The Prairie School in their Division 4 state semi-final.

Colfax held an 18-17 lead on The Prairie School and the Vikings advantage at the free three line proved to be the difference in their 42-41 win over the Hawks. 

Junior Braanna Steen totaled 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Vikings in the first half. The Prairie School freshman scored 5 points before the break while junior Gabbi Ortiz added 4 points and 5 rebounds. 

The teams combined with for only 13 turnovers with the Hawks having an 8-0 advantage on points off of those turnovers. 

Colfax shot 29% from the field in the first half and finished the game shooting 31%. The Hawks shot only 24% in the first half and finishing 30%. 

The Vikings got in the bonus early in the second half and held a big advantage on free throws finishing 17-23 while the Hawks finished 4 of 8 from the line. 

Senior Hannah Hover hit 1 of 2 free throws with 14 seconds remaining to give the Vikings a three-point lead and after a missed three by Woodward the Hawks were able to make a two at the buzzer Colfax celebrated in the end with a one-point win. 

Steen led the Vikings with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Mallie Doucette added 9 points and 4 assists.

The Prairie School was led by Ortiz who finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 steals but was only 6 of 23 from the field. 

Colfax will try to win their first WIAA state championship when they take on Algoma in the title game on Saturday.

Note:  Attendance for the Thursday evening session was 4,823.
